Can You Use Transparent-Tinted/Reflective Vinyl for Sunroof?

So I am getting a new ish car in the next few days and unfortunately it has a full glass roof.

Every tint shop I've ever asked has always said no to tinting sunroofs but lately I noticed there's a lot of tinted vinyl going over headlights etc.

Is it possible to use a mostly transparent reflective vinyl over the outside of a glass roof?

I still want to be able to use it a bit but prefer to get some heat and light rejection coming into summer. I think it would also help with possible stone damage.

Vinyl and tint are far from the same thing. You're likely finding some place reluctant to do it because the rumour is it can cause them to shatter, something about containing more heat in the glass. Personally I doubt it and have never known anyone it's happened to but I'd bet that's why some places won't do it.

Stick with a quality tint, it'll have a longer life and better UV and IR rejection. You'll just have to keep contacting places until you find someone willing to do it.

    • Thanks, They're a bit far from the northside but I'll hit them up for recommendations.

  • Have you tried The Sunroof Centre)? They're in Vic however if you're interstate, they may be able to recommend installers in other states.

    Edit: @Martijn was quicker!

Why did you choose this car if the glass roof is such a negative?

    How odd.

    • It's the only downside, everything else is awesome and it's exactly what I want (well barring the covid mark up).

Thankfully it has a blockout blind instead of those stupid diffuser blinds that most seem to have now.

    Vinyl is largely opaque.
What you'd be after is tint, specifically ceramic tint (this has been shown to reduce heat moreso than standard tint).
Mind you it may come pre-tinted from the factory. My Audi's moonroof did.

    • It's already tinted but no where near dark enough for my liking.

Close the blind or enjoy the sunlight on your melon.
