OP it’s bull**** to call it triple display when you include the built in laptop display as one of them.
This has TWO hdmi/display ports, not THREE.
    * Do you call a single HDMI a “double display adapter”
    * if the device doesn’t have a built in display, such as a raspberry pi, Mac mini or even compute stick… then it’s a dual output.

I will give you credit for putting the fact that macOS doesn’t support multi stream transport right in your description as I recently bought one that didn’t and contacted amazon support

    • Some laptops can't handle triple displays when using the two normal display ports so if this can it's still a feature

      • Not with 2 HDMI ports. The hub doesn't have any display port.

    • Triple display is false advertising, but the MST isn't really a hub issue. Macs do not supported MST (because Apple prefers Thunderbolt 3 with daisy chain setup, which technically makes more sense if you have to go for multiple displays from one port).

if the device doesn’t have a built in display, such as a raspberry pi, Mac mini or even compute stick… then it’s a dual output.

If a device doesn't come with a built in display, it would most likely have an HDMI, microHDMI or Displayport or some other port to output display. For devices which support MST, you can see a lot of them listed in the description are Windows laptops. If you have a desktop, I question USB-C/alt-mode would be implemented. If you can afford a device that supports Thunderbolt 3/4, then obviously it is best to avoid these MST based hubs.

People with M1 devices need to do a bit of research before buying accessories. Don't blame it solely on these hub makers. Apple have no real interest supporting USB-C/alt-mode. It's included in the Thunderbolt 3 chipset, but there are USB-C features which Apple simply don't care about (since Apple really want you to go down Thunderbolt 3 path - it's just a proper Thunderbolt 3 setup is more expensive).

      • Agreed gave them credit for that.

I believe none of them come with power adapter.

    • Correct BYO PSU for these and a large number of USB C hub solutions, unless it explicitly states it comes with one.

  • It seems you can only get these prices on one hub, you can't buy multiple.

Bought one of these to use dual external monitors on Surface Laptop 3 and it did not work at all. Even the USB and SD Card was unreliable.

    YMMV.

  • Unfortunately these all have the same compromises - if you want HDMI @ 4K 60Hz (HDMI 2.0) you will only get 10/100 ethernet which is just pitifully slow.
For those without 4k monitors, unfortunately HDMI 2.0 is also required for 1080p @ 120Hz+ :(

    • It's just this particular hub maker elected to use the older DP 1.2 based chipset. There are pros and cons with that approach. The pros are older USB-C laptops (i.e. 13 inch Macbook Pro 2016 to 2019) can still use it to achieve 4K / 60Hz and that also gives the hub maker a legit reason to save cost on the LAN port (since all the USB 3 bandwidth has been taken by the display).

The cons are for people who have the later DP 1.4 based USB-C/alt-mode devices, they are not getting the most out of the USB-C port. Those people are better off getting a DP 1.4 chipset based hub, which will give them 4K/60Hz (HDMI 2.0, albeit 8-bit but has HDR), gigabit LAN port (assuming the hub maker doesn't try to save cost on that part) and USB 3 ports. Another thing is for people aren't aware that hub is DP 1.2 (and thinking it is DP 1.4 based), they don't realise that price is bad for a DP 1.2 based hub.

USB-C is a mess and our default assumption is that hub makers screw up. However, the reality is more complicated. Intel and Apple jumped the gun so there are DP 1.2 devices. Also, DP 1.4 through USB-C/alt-mode via these hubs has some other twists. With USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 now available, we are going to experience this mess once again later on (as DP 2.0 / alt-mode is coming so these DP 1.4 / alt-mode USB 4 / Thunderbolt 4 chipset….. cough M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max… in the long run… will need to tackle lack of DP 2.0).

    • Yes I'm looking for 4K 60Hz, USB 3, TF and ethernet (gigabit). Can't find any for a reasonable price.

EDIT found this one on amazon for $69.99

Same one on AliExpress approx $41:

  • Have a Comsol hub, single HDMI, image quality on a Dell display via the hub was pretty bad compare to native DisplayPort connection. Not sure if any of these cheap hub would do any good.
