Ryobi 18v Electric Line Trimmers

Hey all,

Just about to buy one of these from Bunnings as a Christmas gift. They seem to have good reviews. Anyone have any feedback on them or advice for better alternatives under $250?

Cheers

I've had the brushless model for a couple of years. Very happy with it.

    • I have the brushed version and it works great for me. I am waiting for a deal on the brushless as i really want to upgrade but still haven't pulled the trigger..

  • What's the difference between the 18v vs the 36v models. Other than the 18v…..

    • the more volts the bigger the diameter of the spinny string and or its thickness.

I have the entry level 18v and it's utter shite. Weakest whipper snipper I've ever used and try my hardest not to use it. It's just weak and hardly does anything. Their edger is amazing value for money, but I'd steer clear of the whipper snipper.

    • Isn’t the new 18v option a whipper snippet and edger?

I had an 18v non brushed. Worked fine, but wasn’t overly powerful. Just meant a little slower on thick grass. I got some thicker line which helped. I liked the twist action of the shaft for easy edging.

Have since upgraded to 36v. Got it on run out because it uses the same battery as the mower. Is more powerful and does the job better IMO.

  • Brushed/normal version…terrible…have one still sitting in the shed doing nothing

Brushless version, straight shaft trimmer….excellent … Flies through the job 100x quicker than the base model and can also accept thicker trimmer line.

  • I have the 36v ones. happy.

  • i would look prefer the line trimmer which can be refilled instead of loading up a new cartridge each time. what a waste.

    • Oh ok. You can't just refill them? Have to buy cartridges? Could be a deal breaker

18v brushless is definitely just a spool load trimmer head.
Feed in a few metres of line and then wind it into the head.

      • Yes, you can reload them. They promote the spooks as an easy alternative to get you to part with extra cash.

  • I have 3 Ozitos. they are really for micro yards. Make your own judgement about yard size and flora to be cut.
Guinea grass needs a steel blade or a herbacide.

    • it's a line trimmer and not a brush cutter, using it as it was intended will be ok,
    • can also be used as an edger, but the tidiness of your work will take practice. if you have lots of edges i would recommend getting a dedicated edger. the 18V one is pretty good.
    • if you are only using the line trimmer for a small area consider the 18V grass shears.

i use the trimmer around the driveway and paving edges, then grass sheers in tight corners and around a c few trees i have as the line trimmer damages the bark of the tree.
then i blow and then mow.
