Should I Buy a 11th Gen Intel/Ryzen CPU Instead of a 12th Gen CPU and Get a Better Graphics Card, or Get 12th Gen (for Gaming)?

Hey Ozbargain
I was just wondering if I should buy a 10th/11th gen intel CPU or a Ryzen one in prebuilt as they seem to be much better deals compared to 12th gen. Should I buy these cheaper CPUs and get a better GPU or will I experience some bottlenecks from the CPU in the future?
I'm planning to spend a bit under $3000 on it so if have any suggestions for me or any deals it would be appreciated if you put them in the replies.
I currently only own a laptop and this will be my leap into proper PC gaming.
I might wait until boxing day to actually buy a PC though.

i've got an old generation ryzen, it doesn't miss a beat, i was talking with my techy cousin about it the other night and i'm pretty sure i'm going to stick to amd …

as for cpu, speed difference isn't massive, last gen will get you a lot more for the price …

gpu is the king, but good luck finding one at a descent price

  • this is kind of a shit time to buy a PC - the 12th gen is expensive as it supports DDR5 and so the board manufacturers hiked their prices.

    • You dont need to buy DDR5, you can get a z690 DDR4 motherboard.

      • You can get DDR4 yes, its just an excuse for board manufacturers to earn more across the board.

  • Not the best time to be buying a full system - last I heard DDR5 was a bit tricky to find so you pay more in addition to the early adopter tax for the 12th gen stuff.

GPUs are probably the main issue, RTX 3080's were meant to be ~$1200 at launch, if you can actually find one in stores you'll be lucky to get it for under $2000.

At the end of the day you'll overpay for components at the moment due to prevailing conditions, but there doesn't look to be an end in sight anytime soon…

  • Not just that - this is kind of a transition phase between DDR4 and DDR5 - hence DDR5 modules are expensive and impossible to find. End 2022 is the time for the big upgrade - AMD's DDR5 solution should be out then, as is the new gen of GPUs.
