Multifunction Colour Laser Printer - Budget $500

Can someone please recommend me a multifunction laser printer under $500?

Mainly for home office and some colour prints for kids school work.

Thanks

  • Really depends on how much space you have at home and how big you want the printer. Quality of print will be very similar across laser printers. If it's for office work and for the kids too, I would buy one with scanner function so you and the kids can upload stuff for work/school.

Good thing about toner is you can use it for a long time. Just double check the price of refill cartridges as the cost for colour (separate cartridges for cyan, magenta and yellow) can add up. It'll still be cheaper than getting it done at a print shop. Non-genuine refill cartridges work fine and honestly not that different to genuine ones.

There's quite a few from officeworks under $500.
    Brother DCP-L3510CDW
    Brother MFC-L3750CDW
    HP M283fdw

    • Hey,
      what's the difference between
      MFC-L3750CDW and DCP-L3510CDW?
and do you reckon it's worth the extra $50?

      • From the description, faster printing speed and the feeder on top which lets you scan and copy in bulk.

Print speed difference is negligible. If you're lazy or have bulky documents that you want to scan/copy, then the feeder is more convenient rather than putting it in page by page.

I got the Kyocera m5521cdn which can be had under $400. It's an office printer so toner is cheap, as well as easily accessible third party refills. Only issue is that it's big and heavy, so you have to think about where it will go.

  • Brother MFC Laser Printers are great, You can find a used one (2nd hand) for a bargain price

Is there a reason you are looking at laser? For your print volume and budget a CISS tank inkjet is more cost effective.
You will pay $500 every time you refill the laser while the inkjet you just pour the amount of ink you need into the tank.
Economy and resolution is much better than lasers too.
    This is $489
This printer comes with a full set of ink bottles. The included ink is designed for printer setup. After some ink is used for priming, the rest is available for printing (up to 11,000 colour or 10,500 mono pages).

    • Inkjets like to be kept plugged in, or else the printhead can dry and clog. A laser doesn't have that problem.

      • I leave my Canon Megatank printer stored for 3 months during my uni break with no problems.

I bought the Epson EcoTank ET-2850, quality is crap, after numerous alignments it still never printed great. Was told that you need to print on high quality printer settings to get good prints. A friend had the same printer with same crap print results.
I took it back and got a Brother MFC-L3745 laser printer. The quality is amazing.. comparing the two prints, is like chalk and cheese.

Replacement non-gen toners are ~$100 set and I think ~$200 for gen.
