Sony KD55X85E TV Compatibility Issues with LG-SP11RA Sound Bar

Hi all,

I have Sony 4k TV Model KD55X85E and I recently went with the sound bar upgrade. Sound bar purchased was LG SP11RA. Been facing compatibility issues with playing dolby/ DTS/ surround content, even though the TV supports upto Dolby Digital +.

Should the sound bar be taking over as the audio system, once the settings are changed on the Sound settings ? I have tried several methods to make it work, but it all failed. I even tried to download dolby content from the Digital Theatre website manually and playing it on the VLC TV app, still the display on the Sound bar reads 'PCM' and not Dolby.

TV is connected to Sound bar via HDMI 'ARC'. I tried to connect my PS4 Pro to the HDMI IN port on the sound bar and guess what, I heard the audio ONLY without the display on the TV. I have Tidal HiFi plus subscription, downloaded the Tital app on my Sony TV, played the dolby content. The TV displayed a message saying ' Playing the content in Stereo. Your device does not support Dolby'.

Overall, am pretty disappointed with this, trying to experience Dolby content on the new sound bar without any luck.

Have I connected anything the wrong way ? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Alternatively, suggestions to make the situation better with any addons would also be welcomed. It might help people with a similar situation.

    Hello CC, my thoughts;

The solution lies in the Sony TV audio settings somewhere. Looks like it does support DTS/Dolby+
I have the same TV model in 65, will check this evening and update you, in the meantime …

    1. Firmware update check for both Sony and LG?
    2. Advanced Audio settings on TV checked? See the below link.
    3. Swap cable- A good quality HDMI cable via arc TV to LG.
    4. Digital Out- Optical cable- It may not be enough to carry Dolby/atmos but can give you an idea.
    5. Also, for Playstation run HDMI to TV (not LG) idea is to get Video from tv screen and audio from LG through HDMI

Found this online, not sure if you have already explored this

    • Thanks mate. Yea I did a lot of search on the solutions and implemented them as well, expecting it to work at some point. But no luck. Will try the above steps once I go home after work and update how it goes.

Quality HDMI cable is a good point. I thought I was using a good one, but l will buy a new one today.

  • Ok. So I went with the above suggestions :

    1. Firmware update check for both Sony and LG?

    Yes both up-to-date. CHECK.

    1. Advanced Audio settings on TV checked? See the below link.

Yes. I have set the output to Dolby Digital Plus, since the TV is connected with the ARC port. Need to select Dolby Digital, only if using the Optical Cable. CHECK.

    1. Swap cable- A good quality HDMI cable via arc TV to LG.

Yes. Bought brand new Premium Certified cable capable of handling Dolby, higher bandwidth, 4k HDR etc. etc. with all the bells and whistles. CHECK

    1. Digital Out- Optical cable- It may not be enough to carry Dolby/atmos but can give you an idea.

Not very clear with this. LG Sound Bar came with the optical cable, but I have not used it since I had the option to either use HDMI ARC port or HDMI + Optical Cable. So went with the ARC option. CHECK.

    1. Also, for Playstation run HDMI to TV (not LG) idea is to get Video from tv screen and audio from LG through HDMI.

Yes it worked. However, the output is not dolby audio and the sound bar shows PCM.

If you have a similar set-up and you have it working, would you be able to explain a bit more on how you did it please ? Appreciate your time.

  • Morning CC,

Ok, looks like you had a crazy time sorting this.
One thing I missed was to ensure you have selected Auto-1 option (output compressed audio without change) under Digital Audio Out settings.

I suggest you join this below facebook group, these and like-minded lads and girls with immense knowledge in HT/Audio setups and can surely help you sort this issue.
