Best NFC Option for Guest Wi-Fi Access

Fairly self explanatory! My house is in a lousy area for 4G access, so I don't mind visitors accessing the wifi, but don't want to have to give the password out, even for a Guest network.

Some of the NFC articles online are old, so just wondering what people use? Do you use a basic tag near the front door, or like a coaster type of accessory to make it obvious?

Why not let them access their own data?

Because nbn is unlimited and the 4G access is lousy? And I'm nice?

Unlimited is always Unlimted* when it comes to Internet services. Have some throttling or data quotas setup on the guest network otherwise if one (or more) of your guests decide to binge 4K Netflix all day or download "Linux ISOs" it would be you who'd get kicked out by your NBN provider.

Unlimited is always Unlimted* when it comes to Internet services

Do you have any evidence of this? On Aussie Broadband I have used 100% of my capacity (100 mbit) at times for days straight and have not heard a word from them.

@Keplaffintech: I'm not disputing the speed you are getting and unlimited service does not refer to the speed of the connection either. I'm referring to the fair use policy that always comes attached to these so called unlimited connections. Your connection could be unlimited but if you continue to download 500TB every month one day you will find yourself disconnected for good.

        • Given the people I'd be inviting round my house, that wouldn't be a concern. We're talking phone access for social media, not downloading on a laptop/pc

Besides, throttling/kicked out doesn't happen, my multiple terrabytes of movies bears witness to that…

@spackbace: If you entertain them well enough they won't need access to the internet.

What phone do you have? Androids have a QR code your guests can scan for the Wifi details I believe

    • Have an Android

I guess I was thinking of either a fridge magnet with the QR code, or an NFC coaster I can leave somewhere. Just seeing what other options there might be that I've missed

      • +1

Just screenshot the QR code, blank out the password, and print onto a magnet?

Or save money and just show your screen with the QR code

      • You prefer to spend half hour explaining how to use NFC or a QR code rather than write down the guest passwords on a piece of paper? If the issue is neighbours using guest network, maybe you can monitor devices using your network and block them.

        • +2

Half hour? "Tap your phone to that" or "Point your phone camera to that"

        • +4

Do they not have COVID check in codes in your timeline

QR code can be interpreted to password easily.

      • +1

Yeah just run it through a QR code reader - eg most camera apps and you've got the wifi password

Pretty sure if you add wifi connection details to NFC, they can just view the saved password from NFC.

Best option, set up an additional SSID on your wifi that is just for guests, then you can share that one and just change at random intervals.
Or, depending on your Wifi setup, some will have a captive portal that will just allow them to register etc for access.

NFC sounds cool, but not the ideal solution.

IMO this is the answer - simple, just works and has no end device compatibility issues - guest network on a different subnet just for them.

What's the issue with setting up a Guest SSID with an easy to remember/type password?

    • +8

      Eg.

      SSID: spackbace_guest
      PW: toyota_camry

    just wondering what people use?

QR code… works for android or apple…

Use one of the many free wifi QR creators like

    https://qifi.org/

    or

    https://qrcode.tec-it.com/en/wifi

    or

    https://www.qr-code-generator.com/solutions/wifi-qr-code/

but don't want to have to give the password out, even for a Guest network.

The password is still visible on any device you 'share' your wifi with via NFC/QR code. Basically the device needs to know the password to connect, so if you want to hide the password from them, it isn't going to happen.

  • My modem allows unlimited guests each with quota. Problem addressed!

Put the guest network on a separate subnet so it can't access devices on your 'home' network, then you can do away with the password altogether if you wanted to.

  • QR Code, a $2 NFC tag off eBay or a label stuck on the modem/fridge/noticeboard/toilet door. Come on dude, you're not that silly :P

  • I got some of these for the office and they work well - https://tenonedesign.com/porter.php and https://tenonedesign.com/hospitality.php - though probably overkill for at home (given that at their core it's the same $2 NFC tag and free QR code as suggested above, just in a pretty package).

  • Download Kali Linux ISO and Rufus.
Flash to a USB as a live USB.
    Open Terminal, run wifite.
See how quickly it breaks your wifi passwords unattended.

Realise it's easier to just get a whiteboard, write your guest network's password there and then periodically check to see if there's anyone (neighbours) on it when you have no guests and change it.
