Warranty When Picking up and Assembling a Reclining Chair

Just wanted to reach out to the OzBargain community for some advice.

I'm looking to purchase reclining lounges and when I asked about picking up, the sales rep said if I choose to pick up instead of have them deliver and assemble, this may void the warranty as the lounge may be assembled incorrectly.

Is it allowed under ACCC?

Not sure if it's relevant, but I'm looking to purchase from Focus on Furniture.

Warranty does not cover misuse . So yes it's allowed, they are not saying it would not be covered if you assembled it correctly.

  • void the warranty as the lounge may be assembled incorrectly.

Yep it is allowed….. So if you put it together wrong and it breaks because you didn't say put all the screws in, why should it be covered under warranty?

    • What if the lounge was assembled correctly and they still refused warranty?

        Things they are NOT saying….

      • That is not what the person said. He said the warranty may be voided if it was assembled incorrectly.

If you assembled it correctly; it will be covered by warranty - however, you may need to be able to show that it was assembled correctly.

  • Can you show the torque wrench used to tighten the hinge of the backrest to the seat squab and it was correctly set to 50Nm? Did the thread fail and strip because you overtightened? Or did the bolt back out and ruin/ kink the mechanism because it was under tightened? Did you use the correct thread locker to make sure the bolts stayed in place?

Sounds like they are trying to scare you into using their overpriced delivery and assembly service. I would pick up and assemble carefully. If they are a difficult company to deal with then trying to get any warranty out of them may be more trouble than it's worth anyway. Paying with credit card gives some additional protection that is easy to use - between 2 months and 2 years, depending on the issuer.
