Stainless Steel Cookware - American All Clad vs Scanpan Fusion 5

Hi,
My wife is looking at changing out our cookware to American All-Clad. I've been told that Scanpan Fusion 5 is very similar but is much cheaper. I assume there are differences. Does anyone know more about these or can recommend the best place to buy either?
Thanks,
Jason

The "American All-Clad" is stainless steel, base and handles. It's 100% made & material sourced in America. The made in America thing - not really important. The solid 100% steel base & handle is excellent, though. This makes for better cooking surface, more even cooking temperature across the surface & it means you can put the pots/pans in the oven at higher temp's due to the 100% steel handle & base.

The "Scanpan Fusion 5" has layers of stainless steel, aluminium & then a copper bottom (for it's base). It has aluminium based handles. The cooking surface will heat up quicker, but less even. You wont be able to put the pots/pans in a very hot oven to cook/finish anything either, as the aluminium handles wont stand up to it. The base may also warp after a shorter period of time from exposure to higher heats.

The "Scanpan" range is almost always ludicrously overpriced too, for what is mostly a bit of a second rate product, compared to upper-quality stuff. On the other hand though, American All Clad can be a bit difficult to source at times, something Scanpan has no issue with due to it's name.

  • Thanks for the detailed response. Sales assistant was trying to tell us that Scanpan Fusion 5 was the same and All Clad was only more expensive because it was made in America. I thought it sounded off and probably had more to do it their low of stock of All Clad vs piles of Scanpan stock.
