Looking to purchase a new headset

Im looking for recommendations mostly.

Budget would probably be $300 MAX

I don’t mind using wired because I had wireless previously and the random cutting out + constant charging over the years annoyed me a lot.

I have heard that getting headphones + a seperate mic is a better option overall but I’m still not very knowledgeable on what is recommended for that route either

For a simple headset I was looking at Cloud Alpha S / Black Pros, Logitech G Pro X or the Razer Blackshark

I did like the Sennheiser PC38x but shipping was quite a lot overseas and it’s by far the most expensive option.

Comments

  • PC38x nothing else comes close.

    • I have heard of the VMODA Boom but my only concern with it is long term durability as I’ve heard of a lot of people having to replace and buy new ones after every year or so

  • I just posted this

gsx 1200 pro with GSP 600 for $300

  • Cooler Master MH751/2. A review here
I've had a MH751 for a few weeks and it's great. It's extremely comfortable, sounds good, looks good (for gaming headset standards) and has a decent mic. I had the cloud alphas for two years and they were great too, I just think they're a bit expensive. The deal a few hours ago for $80 was good, but I'd still recommend the MH751 around this price range. The GSP300 are good if you want something even cheaper at $60 but you can feel the price in the build quality so I'd advise spending a bit more.

  • Hyper X Cloud II > Cloud Alphas anyday

    • What is the microphone quality like on the Cloud 2's and is the mic detachable?

  • I'm in the market for a set of headphones for gaming. I quite enjoyed crinacle's take on the subject. I found his roundup/article helpful, but I'm no closer to choosing a set. I do want a headphone to do double duties for hi res music listening so that's making it hard for me to settle on a pair.

I did try a pair of closed back headphones (Beyerdynamic DT770s) teamed with a USB mic I already have. While the sound was great, the fact that they were closed back meant the sound isolation was so good I couldn't hear myself when I talked and so it was very disorienting. This made me realise I probably need to move to open back headphones. This may or may not be an issue for you, but mentioning in case it didn't occur to you.

    TL:DR

Open back 'audio' headphones offer more detailed sound than most 'gaming' headsets. Seems like you can get higher quality headphones and mics by getting separate components, for similar price to an all in one.

    • The Sennheiser PC38x is on sale on drop.com and it totals to $200 AUD which is a tempting buy.

I’ve never used a closed back design so I’m just a little cautious because I’m used to open back. I play in my own room so outside noise shouldn’t be too bad but it just seems weird to have the audio play out from the cups.

Like how clearly can people hear my music etc?

      • I'm a little confused by your message. If you've never used a closed back design and you've only used open back, then you will know what the worse case sound leakage is like. Open backs are totally open to your environment. No noise shielding.

Do you mean the noise leakage out of open backs feeding back into your mic?

Meanwhile, the cloud alpha s, the logitech and the razer blackshark you've mentioned in your OP are all closed back designs….

        • Sorry it was a typo I meant I’ve only ever used closed back and I’ve never tried an open back design

          • @AlexMX: Ah yes, that makes sense. I thought so but wasn't sure.

If you have the luxury of gaming in your room and you won't disturb anyone, open back is probably preferred. Open back is preferred by many audiophiles as they provide better detail and soundstage. Although they seem to lack bass compared to closed.

I've only had one pair of portable AKG open backs.  There's basically no sound isolation so you can hear outside noises pretty much near normally. So you can't wear them on public transport as you'll hear the bus/train/tram/plane.

Similarly, everyone else can hear what you're listening to when it's quiet. Bear in mind they are headphone drivers, not speakers, and other people aren't right up against the drivers. Perhaps the sound other people hear is the equivalent to what closed backs sound like when they aren't up against the side of your head.

      • meanwhile, the PC38x gets decent reviews. It does depend on what your priorities are with headphones and how much you care about meeting those priorities. You'll probably be happy with them. What puts me off about buying from drop is warranty issues if anything goes wrong.

Here's a critical review of the headphones. Useful cos it draws out some shortcomings, which you may not even care about. Obviously coloured by the reviewer's preferences but crinacle seems to be pleasingly pragmatic about these things.

        • I realise they do have free returns within 30 days but I am also worried with having to deal with shipping with any warranty related issues too since it seems these products aren’t easily distributed within Australia.
