Buying a New Phone with AmEx for Screen Insurance. Can I Partially Pay with Gift Cards?

As per title,

Am planning to get a new phone, and wish to use Amex card to get a screen insurance (only cause I have been cracking them even with screen protector and case / unlucky).

Was wondering if I would still be eiligible for the screen insurance if I pay say 50% of it with gift cards (say like from JbHiFI gift cards earned via Telstra sign up promo) and the balance of it with Amex ?

Cheers

  • According to pointhacks, no. They say it needs to be full purchase price.

    • ah bugger! cheers for that!

      • It does say if you’re paying for the phone monthly through a provider you’re also covered, but that wouldn’t help with the JB Gift Card payment.

        • yeah true, means i have to sign up to one of those telstra / optus plans.

          • @georgegates5: No you don't have to signup to any plans,
Everyone is generally better off buying stuff upfront (if they can) at a slight discount than pay later (with unnecessary mobile plans, or higher mobile phone charges)

  • Logic will say no.
Otherwise some will use 99% giftcard and 1% amex to buy phones.

  • Not too much of a loss.
If you're getting GCs at a 10% discount, you'd only save 10% of the 50%… I'd suggest that foregoing that savings would be worth it for the insurance

    • yeah true! looking at the prices of new phone these days and the cost to replace a broken screen… might as well get a new one =_=

  • I wonder how it works when some amount is payed by like a promo voucher (like eBay 10% off or something).

    Gift card ofcourse doesn't work

    • +1

well i think it be the final amount, judging by how ebay promo voucher works, after keying in the code, you will only pay the final amount.
