Best Antivirus Program for Windows + Android

Hi All,

I'm looking to buy an antivirus program for my Windows 10 laptop and Android phone. I trade crypto often using both devices and would like to increase protection with antivirus, anti malware, …. features.

Different review sites have different ranking, so was confused.

Which program offers the best protection while securing the private data (without sharing with third parties)

Norton
Mcafee
Kaspersky
Bit defender
Avast
Avira

Thanks in advance !!!

What can any of us tell you that the people who actually test and compare antivirus software can't?

    • More reliable review site? Or better comparison/references?

  • Get Kaspersky with the 3 device pack from Saveonit. It's dirt cheap right now and you can use it on your computer and phone.

    • Thanks Yippy. I have never used the saveonit website. It also has great deal for other antivirus. How do they sell the licences so cheap compared to the original product?

  • That's a good deal, yippy.

Pfizer or moderna are meant to be good

Although I find all the added extras you get in the paid versions of antivirus software that you don't get in the free versions are mostly just a pain in the arse. Like Kaspersky:

-payment protection - annoying - you'll see what I mean if you use it.
-VPN - I've already got a better one
    - ad blocker - already got a better one
    - private browsing - Firefox
    - webcam protection - device manager or settings
    -password manager - Bitwarden
    etc.

    • I totally agree with that. I'm using the Internet security version and I have disabled all that stuff and uninstalled the vpn.

  • This guy does a heap of testing (you can even see the tests): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_kaSPvGEsI

I would get 3 devices for 2 years from under $20 here: https://www.saveonit.com.au/product/kaspersky-internet-secur…

Kaspersky is based in Russia and is rumoured to have been infiltrated by the KGB or whatever Putin wants to call his secret service these days. You roll the dice on any service or product to come out of an adversarial totalitarian or communist state like Huawei and that is why many Western governments like our own shy away from these products. I mean Putin is currently threatening to invade a sovereign state as we speak! With the threats related to Huawei, there has been recent proof of spying activity. They pay grubby former politicians big money that is way over the top to sit on their local boards as stooges, who don't really understand the inner workings of the company or its technology. They also do a lot of advertising that probably isn't that necessary to try and endear themselves to the common folk. Kaspersky does a lot of advertising too and prices its product aggressively, so that tends to further my impression that the PR exercise might be necessary because it is on the nose.

I've noticed that just about every time APC Magazine and other publications do tests on AV security products, Bitdefender tends to come out on top. It tends to be the most expensive though but if you search about you can often find trial periods and significant discounts. Every now and again when I see one that is good enough I buy it and just add it to the license, so I am covered for several years now and don't have to worry. I was shocked however to notice recently that the previously poor inbuilt Windows Security had some fantastic results in testing in a fairly recent edition of APC that pretty much put it on par with the likes of Kaspersky and Bitdefender. The article then posed the question as to whether people will need to pay for these products in the future if Windows continues to keep up with threats etc. I notice that it is probably why a lot of these companies are trying to differentiate their products now by adding on VPN services, password managers and other features to try to maintain their user base.

    • bought one and didn’t use it

I like malwarebytes if you torrent it blocks a lot of known bad IP's whether your using a VPN or not.
Just about all AV's have free 2 week trial versions just pick out the one you like most.
Better yet search OZbgn probably find something free for a few months in a deal.

  • Trend Micro
I also use Malware Bytes in conjunction with TM.

  • The best i have used over many years are tools from ESET.
Very low resource usage and very effective

    • very costly nowadays

If you install Kaspersky it removes Malwarebytes for some reason.

I never get viruses and the antivirus software I've used never finds any, so I can't say how effective it would be if I ever get a virus.

  • Thanks all. I have decided to tryout Norton 360 (trial) and so far it was okay - didn't slow down my pc (yet).

  • Kaspersky seems to be blocking Discord now and maybe even Microsoft Store.

I might try Trend Micro or ESET.

  • Anti virus wont help you much op … anyone can make a virus that AV wont detect these days.

If you have win 10 enterprise, use AppLocker and block /temp /downloads /documents /desktop folders from being able to run EXE's. Make your user NOT an admin.

If you only have windows pro edition, you can use SRP (software restriction policy) to do the same thing. Main thing is remove admin permission from main user.

This is what the pro's do. Dont waste your time worrying about AV, windows 10 comes with defender AV which is free and its as good/bad as the rest.

As for android, meh … there really isnt an issue if you ONLY download apps from the app store. Just block app installs from other locations / browser.

If apps cant run in the first place, which is what this 'principle' is all about, anti virus becomes mostly irrelevant.

You probably want to permanently disable macro's in your microsoft office settings, while you are at it.

  • At the browser level, Malwarebytes + uBlock Origin extensions have been effective.

  • I find most AV software just gets in the way and slows your PC down without offering any major benefits. I just use the following:

Defender, it's free (this is the way)
Pihole with decent blocklists (or Adguard)
Ublock origin extension installed on your web browser
    Router/firewall with IPS
Cold storage backups for when all else fails
    Common sense

Can't stress the bottom two enough…
