Acer Nitro 5 (NH.QEUSA.001) — Thunderbolt 4?

Hi all,

I’m contemplating purchasing this laptop. However, I’m uncertain whether the USB-C port supports Thunderbolt 4. The specifications don’t mention it, but I know that one of the cheaper models with the Intel Core I5 11400H processor had it (but also didn’t mention it within the specifications). Could anyone please clarify?

Cheers!

I better get my eyes checked. Thank you mate.

(Edit: I just noticed the assets didn’t load initially. Refreshing the browser tab resolved it.)

  • In case anyone is considering purchasing this laptop (AN515-57-79U4/NH.QEUSA.001) in the future, be aware that it does NOT support Thunderbolt 4 or DisplayPort Alternate Mode via USB-C (even though the product page suggested otherwise). Hence, the display configuration is limited to a single external display via HDMI (this is a dealbreaker for me and I'll be attempting to return it to Harvey Norman for a refund). The absence of this functionality is quite baffling, as it's present on the less expensive model (AN515-57-54ZA/NH.QDGSA.002). Additionally, the RAM configuration is a single module of Samsung M471A2K43EB1-CWE (16GB, 3200MHz, CL22, 2Rx8). Finally, the M.2 NVME SSD is the SK Hynix HFM512GD3JX016N.

    • in the bargain threads it was shared that there are models that don't include the features like thunderbolt 4 and USB display ports. the harvey norman listings are not to be trusted, especially as thunderbolt isn't even a tabled specification in their lists.

      • Sure, but it's not just the Harvey Norman product listings which are incorrect. The data sheets and user manuals provided by Acer are also incorrect, as it states that only the models prefixed with AN515-56 and AN517-53 support Thunderbolt 4 via USB-C, where as models prefixed with AN515-45, AN515-57, AN517-41, and AN517-54 do not. As we know, this doesn't apply to the AN515-57-54ZA/NH.QDGSA.002.

        • to be fair, the existence of thunderbolt 4 was not existent in any threads on ozbargain until it was pointed out which SPECIFIC model had it. venturing outside of that one specific model was always taking a chance at rolling dice. Harvey Norman spec pages don't make any mention of thunderbolt 4 and the existence of such a port was only found by researching page listings from other retailers

a quick google would yield all the following pages of which none mention thunderbolt 4
          https://online.acer.com.au/sale/acer-nitro-5-intel-core-i7-1…
          https://www.binglee.com.au/products/acer-nitro-5-gaming-lapt…

this listing shows thunderbolt 4 for a AN515-57-704F
          https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-nitro…
          and this for a NH.QD9SA.001
          https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/acer-nitro-5-156-inches-gamin…

if the harvey norman website did list thunderbolt 4 or you could find evidence that another retailer listed it as a feature and it wasn't supplied, perhaps you could ask for a refund. Outside of these you're at the mercy of the department manager as to whether they take it back. You could potentially say you expected thunderbolt 4 based on a display model having it or something along those lines but that would be treading into a grey area that only you can make the call as to whether its right or wrong

  • I went to HN today, most of the Nitro 5 have no TB symbo beside the type-c port. Only a AN514-57 (16GB 512GB 11800H 3060 priced around $1999) has the thunderbolt symbo.

The only way to confirm is to check the symbo, whether it is normal USB (folk) or Thunderbolt (lightening)

Or just avoid buying from Harvey norman. AFIK this is the only store sells none TB4 version.

    • Unfortunately, my local Harvey Norman store didn't have any of the Acer Nitro 5 models in stock for physical/visual inspection, as this would have been preferred. It appears that the Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-54-75BJ/NH.QC2SA.006) is identical to the Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57-79U4/NH.QEUSA.001) with the exception that the former supports an additional display (via Mini DisplayPort) and Thunderbolt 4 via USB-C at an additional cost (although, they're both currently listed for $2,195 at Harvey Norman). I am debating whether to return the laptop for a refund or keep it and spend the money on DisplayLink adapters (or a dock) to achieve a multiple display configuration. Certainly, it's not a perfect laptop, but it's still great value when compared to competing products which are far more expensive than $1,495.

      • Do you know how to refund or exchange a thunderbolt model with Havery Norman? As they don't allow change of mind refund. The one I bought has no problem except missing thunderbolt and alt-mode. But this feature is not even listed on the Harvey Norman's website.

  • Hi Ben,

I too bought from HN and bought under the impression that the USB-C was TB-4… Duh! SHould have confirmed. I am now needing to set up for dual monitors for work. What Display Link Adapter did you get? Are you using the Displaylink and HDMI outputs at the same time?

I'm about to drop some coin on a couple of monitors for CAD and General Business… I love the laptop… It's running rings around my old one. My wife's Macbook Air beats it hands down on battery life though! ;)

    Cheers

    Brendan.

  • Hi,
Would you recommend the laptop otherwise? I'm looking for something around the $1200 mark. Very casual gaming and more for work but if I decide i want to try Fortnite or a new GTA (i know.. dreams) comes out.. i don't want my specs to be too outdated. Any suggestions on this or otherwise? Kind of stuck between Acer nitro i716gb and a 3050ti and the dell g15 or whatever it is

    Tia
