OzB's Favourite Air Purifier for Allergy/Dust on Top Floor Apartment

Hi OzB,

I've searched the forums and couldn't find a definitive answer to help with all the dust that blows in our top floor apartment. All surrounding properties are 1 or 2 story houses, so I believe this is why there's so much dust - since there's nothing to block the airflow from outside. Yes I've read "close your windows" and "take hayfever tablets", but we're after additional solutions and have concluded that an air purifier might help? Also whilst we're on this topic, anyone suggest a vacuum with HEPA filter say <$300?

Many thanks OzB fam!

  • The Xiaomi 4 series air filter (the latest version) seems to be the most popular one on here. I'm waiting for a sale on it myself. You can get the 3 series cheaper, but its replacement filters will obviously go out of production sooner so stock up well if you go with them.

I personally have a Dyson hand vacuum for quick clean ups, but I definitely wouldn't rely on it for very dusty carpets. It's amazing for hard floors as long as you get the hard floor cleaner head. The carpet head will just throw bigger pieces of stuff like rice across the wooden floors without picking it up.

    • Thank you that's noted - given that the 4 is the latest model, what sale price would you look to purchase at?
Also I've used the Dyson hand held at my gf's place, but tbh I don't think it'll do well against dust in our apartment. Thanks for your comment though :)

      • If you search for xiaomi air purifier, it'll come up with a list of all the recent sale prices. I'm still waiting to see how low any of the 4 series go. The different models even within a series are a bit bewildering at times and even though I've been researching on here for a couple of months, I'm still not entirely sure what the best price is.

Luckily when someone posts a deal, they'll tend to mention if it's the equal best historical price.

I'm quite new to Oz bargain in general.

        • Excellent I'll save an OzB alert for the 4 series here and read some reviews :)

I'm still using an older Xiaomi Purifier 2 and it's been really good for dust/allergies the last few years. Also good in bushfire season when the smoke hits.

The main advantage is the abundance of filters available for Xiaomi since almost all of their purifiers use the same kind of filter. There's also different types.

    • Thanks for sharing! Good to know the older model still works well. Being the a apartment block we sure get plenty of backfire smoke coming our way lol

      • Just keep in mind that HEPA is the highest grade filter you can get for these things. It's worth it to pay a bit more for them.

    Best bang for your buck:

    Air purifier - Xiaomi 3H

    Vacuum - Dreame v10

(There are later models of each, but I think the above get you 99% of the functionality for a decent price discount. Very popular models so you’ll have filters available for many years, at least as long as the devices still work).

    • Appreciate your recommendations! Will look into Dreame v10 :)

    • Any idea why air purifiers are dramatically more expensive in Australia than the USA? Looking at this wire cutter article, none of the USA models are available in Australia (Coway mighty 1512 you pay like 200$ shipping). https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-air-purifier…

Winix has a completely different set of models that are like double the price

  • FÖRNUFTIG / VINDRIKTNING
    Air purifier/air quality sensor.
Recommend you try this from IKEA.( but you need 2 Filters )
    I had one .

  • Xiaomi 3H not recommended by Choice. Dust performance score 67% compared to the expensive Samsung model which scored 95% and topped the reviews.
At least Xiaomi outperformed Dyson and the scam Greentech brand.

    • @Gazza52 - Do you have a copy of the review you could paste/PM please?

I am curious how they rated the Xiaomi and what other models above it they recommended.

Recommended models highest to lowest :
        Samsung AX7500K
        Philips Series 3000i
        Sharp FX-J80J-W
        Samsung AX5500K
        Inova Air Airclean E20+
        Philips Series 2000i
        Winix Zero+ Pro5 Stage

Xiaomi 3H scored just OK for dust and smoke removal, and poor for VOC removal. Also, noisy on low fan setting.

        • @Gazza52 - Did they say which filter the Xiaomi came with?

I am wondering if it didn’t have the filter suitable for VOC.

          • @StonedWizard: Pre-filter
            Charcoal filter
            HEPA filter

        • lol is there a more affordable low-mid budget list they came up with? cheers Gaz

  • Do you need wifi to operate the Xiaomi purifiers?

Does it have a plastic smell on first use?

  • Attach hepa filter to cheapest fan with duct tape

    • Wouldn't the fan need to be sucking and not blowing? 🤣🤣

      • PC fan with USB adapter will do the trick.

      • as long as air is moving through the filter. Could use a box fan if you want suck

  • For a HEPA vacuum I'd suggest ones that are bagged. I've been using the Henry Allergy vacuum and its a night and day difference. The benefits of bagged vaccums are that all the dust particles arent seeping out through the gaps. Also when dispensing the garbage none of the dust will go flying into the air.

    • oooh interesting thanks for the info - never thought of the bag trapping dust particles but it does make sense!

curious - could we then use a like say an ozito shopvac + bag + hepa filter?

As long as its bagged and a HEPA filter its more than enough
