SUV around $60k- $70k

Help me pick! Need some guidance here as I’m afraid I’ve missed something.
Yet to test drive as I want to narrow down the list first and obtain input.
Need to factor in some space for a rear facing baby seat.
Panaromic sunroof is ideal.
360 camera is ideal.
Mainly used for city driving.

  • Ford Escape Vignale: nice engine, panaromic sunroof, adjustable/moveable rear seats. Decent boot.
Light steering, potential bumpy ride, some say seats are very uncomfortable but I guess thats subjective.
    8 inch infortaintment touch screen…
    Drive away $55k

  • Mazda CX-5 Akera 2.5 turbo: tiny sunroof, smaller boot and room for rear passengers, could be tight for the front passenger with a rear facing baby seat. 360 degrees camera.
    Reading about thin paint issues?
    Drive away $57k

  • VW Elegane or R line: still reading of DSG issues? Seems to have everything I need though. Adjustable rear seats, decent boot size. Panaromic sunroof if optioned along with sound package.
Drive away $65-$67k (starting to reach luxury car prices).

Are there any other cars I should be looking at?
(The Subaru forester seems to be getting good reviews however the CVT is a turn off).

These articles are written by Ozbargain themselves in effort to give the impression people actually seek advice. It is a form of "inclusion" making others feel as if their opinion and time is important.
They are obviously written by 8 - 10 year olds professing to be much older. They expose themselves in the often ridiculous questions they pose. Such as this one.

  • Wish I had a spare 70K to splash out on nice cars, Covid-19 has made it hard on most Australians.

Not to mention people losing their homes and income….

Going by the amount of car threads on OZB lately, sounds like people have more cash to burn than ever. On cars that have heavily inflated prices.

We've got a cx5, it is pretty tight with the rear facing seat. I'm 6'4" and don't fit with the seat behind me, my wife is 6' and fits but it's not super comfortable. I really like the car though, I preferred how it drove over everything else we looked at.

You might need a new car in three years when your toddler is also 6 foot

      • Haha I hope not, a 6 foot toddler sounds like a nightmare!

    • Thank you, this is what really hooked us, the ride and handling however it is smaller than other SUVs. We’re shorter than both of you, so it might actually work by the sounds of things.

I'll try send you some pictures with the seat in later today if you'd like. We paid 48,500 late June 2021 for the gtsp with the non turbo 2.5, premium paint, carpet mats and boot lighting (strongly recommend that one), full tank and black slimline plates(might be standard). I did get some quotes through motor scout which came out to be around the same price as what we had negotiated with the dealer so I'd recommend have a look into that as well to give you a starting point on price.

The new 2022 facelift is coming soon as well if you can wait for that the 2021's might come done in price if there is still stock.

        • I would really appreciate that, thank you kindly.
We are looking at the 2022 GT SP or Akera (the 360 camera seems useful),

          Thanks again

I am a CX9 fan hence the user name :-). However switched to Kluger purely because recent CX9 s has a hump on the floor board in the second row. If you have 3 passengers in the 2nd row, it can be quite difficult to person in the middle as there is not proper foot rest.

    • The hump is required due to the drive shaft for the AWD system.
It'll be on any car with RWD or AWD

      • Not really. It purely depends on how the vehicle was designed. AWD Kluger is just flat.

I picked up my Rline a couple months ago, pretty happy with it. Got it fully optioned out.
The only gripe I have is the indicators/wipers being on the wrong side, and the lack of wireless charging for my phone.

Would have been fine with a Rav4 but the wait time was ridiculous and the car is gutless. The Toyota salesperson I dealt with was one of the most arrogant I've ever dealt with.
Maybe wait a couple months for the new Tiguan AllSpace Rline instead?

    • I really want the R line, ticks all the boxes and is very practical.
My single one concern is I’m still reading of issues with the DSG failures… do I take a punt?

      • +1

This is my first DSG experience and I'm not worried, 5 year warranty. Also got the 5 year care plan which includes roadside assist.

The R line is more sporty than its competitors, had some fun with it in sport mode around some bendy parts. Obviously it can't compete with a proper sports car.
I had to "downgrade" to an SUV because we have a lil bub on the way… parting with my 86 still hurts but I didn't have the space for it and the 2nd hand market is bonkers so I got a good deal for it.

Personally if I had known the new AllSpace is coming I might have waited a bit longer for it. The extra space would be welcomed, the Bugaboo takes up a huge amount of space in my boot already.

        • Can I ask what model bugaboo?
We have the Fox 3 and interested to see how much of the boot it would take in the Tiguan.

Finally can I ask what price you got in the Tiggy?

          • +1

@Muscles: I have a Fox 3 too. I shouldn't have said "huge" amount but it does take up more space compared to what my friends are driving. (Sorrento, Kluger, GLC and X5)
We have a Maxi Cosi Vita Pro convertible child seat and that fits in fine, couldn't imagine getting one of those huge 0 to 8 yr old child seats though.

I didn't get any monetary discount off my tiggy except matching tints and some cleaning products. Covid has made it pretty difficult to get a discount for high demand vehicles nowadays. However my friend recently bought a GLE and got a bit of a discount but luxury car brands operate on a diff model to us in our pleb brands.

$69k DA in Victoria, sound&vision, pano and paint, with 5 year care plan. Pretty much what you would see on the online VW price calculator.

I didnt see when you needed the vehicle in your post. There are large delays with buying a new vehicle currently. You'll need to ring around and find out wait times, they might cross a few vehicles off your list straight away (assuming you're buying new with that budget). I went through the same thing 18 months ago just before my wife got pregnant.

You need to consider wagons. They're larger and the bonus is they're also cheaper than their SUV equivalant.

We ended up purchasing a Mazda 6 wagon, in Atenza spec. It has everything.
They drive so much better than the SUVs, as they're lighter, and therefore better on fuel, acceleration, handling. Cheaper running costs, as brakes and tyres not as expensive.

Runners up would be Subaru Outback, otherwise you could consider the Skoda Octavia or Superb.

We pack out Mazda 6 to the roof. I'm considering selling our Prado(which we dont really drive) to buy a CX9.

    • That is a good point.
I’m in no real rush but prefer no longer than 6 months.
The missus prefers a SUV for height, moving the Bub in and out.
If I had it my way, I’d keep my current hatchback…
The CX-5 lag time doesn’t seem as bad as some though.

  • Kia sportage GT I have the 2017 we've had no problems and love it, I'm seriously thinking of updating to the 2022 later this year apparently it's currently about a 3 month wait for new

  • I'd get the VW Tiguan if your budget allows it, or CX9. I've sat in a CX5 and ridden in a Tiguan. Tig has more space, rear seats have temp controls. Boot is bigger.
CX5 top spec has the turbo, but no point with powerful engine if you and your bubs don't fit comfortably.

CX8 is much better sized, however you can't get the turbo engine.
CX9 is around $65 to $70K upper spec with the same turbo engine as the top spec CX5. Worth considering.

  • I preordered the CX9 AWD Azami lately, delivery is March-April.
Test drove the CX9, love the handling the engine power. Not the biggest space for a 7 seater but interior is more classy than Toyota.

  • A Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe checks all your boxes
