Car Insurance for Learner Driver/Owner

Hi all, I'm trying to get an idea of the cost for comprehensive insurance for a car I'm considering buying. I'm 30yo+ and still on my learner's in metro Melb. I can't find any online quote websites that let me specify that I'm a learner, are there any out there? Call centres are closed today.

Public holiday at OzBargain too. Skeleton staff to handle uninsured accident advise.

You're considered high risk as a learner so don't expect anything reasonable.

    • Didn't let me specify my license type

It is a well documented fact that young newly licenced drivers are high risk. It is much harder to find data on learner drivers, because they very rarely buy a car before they get a licence and want to insure it. The established wisdom is that learner drivers are quite low risk. And their risk jumps hugely as soon as they are handed a licence and are no longer being supervised when they are driving.

You still need a fully licensed driver to supervise you when you drive. Its easy to get Insurance for the licensed driver!

    • I live on my own. Will get my mum to supervise me when she visits. Insurance won't let me put my mum down as the main driver willthey?

Why not? She is the main driver. You are just a learner/owner.

When you get your full license, add yourself as a driver.

  • I know with AAMI you just pay an additional excess.

    Inexperienced driver excess
    $400 - If driver listed
$1,400 - If driver not listed

This excess applies if an inexperienced driver was driving, using or in charge of your car at the time of the incident. It also applies to learner drivers. This excess is in addition to any other excess that applies.
Note: an inexperienced driver is someone who is 25 years or over and has not held a driver licence specific to the car type for at least the past 2 consecutive years prior to the incident.

we've been through this a few times over the last couple of years.
CGU explicitly state that a learner driver (if accompanied by the appropriate full licence supervising driver in front passenger seat) is treated as a full licence driver. they are effectively covering the supervising driver as being in control of the vehicle.
NRMA (same IAG group) don't even have an option on web sites to name the learner because they don't have a solo licence. The wording in policies is not clear however the phone operator that I spoke to stated they cover L same as CGU even though policy is not clear. other insurers may be the same

Just get it insured in your mum's name as the main driver, since you cant drive it without her. Nominate yourself as a secondary driver. When you are on your own license, move yourself up to main driver and your mum as secondary.

  • Why buy a car now? If you have multiple people teaching you to drive it makes sense. But if it is just your mum why not use her car, and wait to buy a car when you can drive it on your own (and you'll get a better feel for what you want when you have more experience driving).
