Optometrist Quoted Me $1200 for Rimless Glasses. Where to Get Them Cheaper?

I went to the optometrist to try and get rimless glasses like Yu Wenzhou from Live Action Netflix King's Avatar today: https://64.media.tumblr.com/8dfd7a9f830f7ef85812f582e587afb1…

They had a display unit and quoted me $1200 which I think is way too much so I'm asking OzBargain where to get them in Sydney for cheaper.

Have you asked the local Specsavers or got an online quote? Rimless are more expensive (a pair cost me $600 odd back in the day).

    • I asked a friend who works at Specsavers:
2 pairs for the price of one single vision distance rimless frame $399 + ultraclear superclean (anti-reflective coating) $70 with 25% off discount with medibank private down to $52.50 per pair to put it on. So if ur looking for 2 pairs both with anti-reflective coating it’s about $504. You might also get extra discounts depending on what policy with Medibank Private you are on.

I asked a friend who works at Specsavers:

Didn't think to check with them before posting…?

        • +2

didn't have glasses so couldn't see who he was calling or messaging

          but could type a topic

      • +5

        Should have gone to Specsavers.

    • +1 for vision direct.

OPSM were charging me $600 for a rimless pair of Persols; Vision Driect was $150 delivered from HK.

Caution: get the lens work done locally - I gave Vision Direct my prescription yet they still got the focal length wrong. They gave me distance lens rather than those for computer work.

      • If you get lens and frames from different places, how do you make them fit?

        • +3

Buy the cheap frames, then take them into wherever and ask for the lenses to be fitted. Why you should always ask for a copy of your prescription.

    • Thanks, this looks like the correct link my friend told me

  • That is one freaky looking dude.

Why would you want to look like him?

    • You have to watch the show to understand.
He is shrewd, calculating and a hard worker.
By far the best looking guy with glasses from the show, perhaps this angle is not great.

      • Firing up Netflix now to confirm whether, in actual fact, the guy is freaky looking.

        • Actually in my Top 20 recommendations on Netlfix if you don't mind subtitles

He is shrewd, calculating and a hard worker

        It’s a fictional story.

        • But it's all in the glasses…

        • He is shrewd, calculating

Exactly the guy you don't want to see when you walk into a meeting.

          hard worker

These are the only glasses you need.

  • Those are similar looking to standard cheap glasses on Aliexpress… So you can get a pair for like $10 or $40 for nice pair with blue light or transitions. Helps to have IPD as the glasses are generally narrower/smaller overall Cheapest

  • Get your prescription done and buy from aliexpresss

  • Hope this doesn't offend, but those glasses look basic and boring as. You could surely do better just walking into an optometrist and trying on a selection and finding what simply what works great on you. Sometimes it's the ones you'd pass over that surprise you.

    • Yeah I like the squared rims and rimless design, maybe they were trying to upsell me but I'll try on my face tomorrow

    We get all ours from
    https://www.zennioptical.com/
    https://www.zennioptical.com/b/rimless-glasses

much cheaper than the rip off prices in Australia

    • Yeah, I've had a few pairs from Zenni now, they are great. Have you had any luck claiming on health fund? HBF said no for me.
That said, Zenni glasses are still cheaper than buying in Oz even with the health fund rebate.

      • Have you had any luck claiming on health fund?

        No

I've bought all my glasses from https://au.eyebuydirect.com/ for years now. Once you're confident of your sizing it's incredibly easy. If you don't know what sizes look best on you try some on in a local spec savers and note the three numbers on the inside of one of the arm for the glasses that look good on you.

What's your prescription and what were the lenses quoted?

If you have a "strong" prescription, they more than likely went with a high index lense as it will be thinner and less visible with a rimless frame. These will come a significantly higher cost than a standard lense. There are also additional steps in the processing of a rimless lense as opposed to a standard frame and lense like drilling and edge polishing which will contribute to the additional cost.

Despite the higher cost, the optometrist will be selecting the right lense for the frame that you're after. With your interest in this particular frame, the additional cost would be worth it to ensure the correct lense and fitment.

You will be able to get them cheaper online but there's a very high risk of not getting what you want.

Note: I'm a certified optical dispenser and used to work for an optometrist.

    • So the best way to buy new glasses is to buy my own frame online, then take it to optometrist to buy appropriate lens?

    • the additional cost would be worth it

      I am calling bull dust

Where are the frames and lenses manufactured?

Its known Australia is a country of maximum price why because we can and the sheeple will just accept this.
Australian glasses are not made any different or have any special magic compared to a set from overseas

      • +1

someone overseas is being paid $1.00 a week… locally they are on $50/hr… it adds up

  • Hope this isn't thread-jacking, but my 70y/o mum went for an eye test. The optometrist said she needed a slight increase in the script and could benefit from tri-focal lenses.
She has reasonably good vision for her age but typically wears glasses for reading and driving etc.

Anyway, the optometrist quoted circa $800 for the new lenses (excluding frames). This price seems awfully high to me - does anyone here have any experience with this stuff?

Ask the optometrist for the prescription and you can always ring around a few other places and ask. Though from experience all brick and mortar places charge heaps, this is how they make their profit.
Worth checking out the online options we've mentioned in this thread, I found them so cheap that I ordered a pair just to see, figuring if they were crap, I hadn't really lost anything.

      • Thanks sacah, good idea!
