Best Place to Find Tradespeople for Renovations

Hey guys!

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I just got my first place recently and had some questions about finding good tradespeople for renovations that I want to do. I've never had to hire anyone before, so not quite sure what the best option would be.

There's nothing too major that needs done to the place at the moment - there's a live wire that needs fixing ASAP that will obviously need an electrician, and a wall that's been water damaged that will need a builder, and we were going to get them each to do a few other things while they're out to save on call out fee (like installing some lights/fans, putting more power points in etc), but I'm not sure what the best way to find said tradespeople is. Of course there's sites like Airtasker/hipages, but having never used them before - are they reliable? Like if something goes wrong, or if there's more work that needs to get added on etc? Or would I be better off just googling around and calling some of the better rated electricians/builders etc until I find one I'm happy with, and ignore sites like Airtasker all together? I'm in South Brisbane area if it makes a difference.

Thanks in advanced!

that can be roulette as often hipages is desperadoes who have no work

Avoid hipages, airtasker and large/brand companies. Look on your local Facebook community page for recommended tradies. I don’t waste their time getting numerous quotes, just make sure the hourly rate is acceptable

The main issue with that is I don't know what a reasonable hourly rate is since I've never had to do this before. Any suggestions?

        Sparky $70/h
        Plumber $90/h
        Chippy $60/h
        Builder $100/h

These are ballparks and highly dependent on where you live

Try and find a tradie that will give you a fixed rate for the full job - if you have a slow tradie then you could be up for a big bill.

        • That's good thinking!

ServiceSeeking.com.au, but choose quality of work and high star ratings and review count as your priority over cheapest price.

5 stars or thereabouts and dozens of reviews = OK, anything less = iffy.

I would ask for recommendations on your local area facebook pages…

Word of mouth is the best solution to finding tradies.
