Google Pixel 6 or Other Budget Phones?

Hi,

I am choosing a new phone and wondering if there's a reason to spend a fair bit for a higher-end phone? The pixel 6 seems pretty cool, the tensor chip and machine-learning capabilities quite advanced.

I don't purchase new phones often, so I'm wondering if there's point in forking out the 1K for the pixel, as opposed to something more budget <$500? Do you find that the extra features/greater processing power justify the higher price point of flagship phones?

Thanks,

  • My experience is that mid range phones are ok with normal usage. The main difference is the Camera/Photos, Sound and software updates. High end phones stay smooth after 2-3 years while mid range start getting sluggish. But you are paying almost double the price. Wait for good deal to come on high end phones or buy any mid range any time.

I think it's one of those things where if you are someone who would benefit from getting a Pixel 6 or other flagship you will know you are that person. The features and technology probably justify the price but for the average user they probably won't be getting $500 worth of extra benefit from a flagship vs a mid-range.

I currently have a mid-range phone which was $450 a few years ago and am pretty happy with it. The reason to eventually replace it will likely be when battery life becomes to bad to keep using. So I can't really see how a flagship is going to be anymore useful. When I do eventually upgrade, a new camera and 5G would be great but I don't think this things will make a noticeable difference so I would just continue to stick with mid-range.

I got a Pixel 6, son has a Redmi Note 10 Pro, daughter Poco F3, wife HUAWEI P30 Pro … there is not a lot of difference between them!
The Pixel 6 does 4k @ 60p and some photo tricks, but it really isn't any "better" at core functions than the others :/
I am so disappointed with the Pixel 6 that I will gift it to a friend and buy myself a OnePlus 10 Pro on release ..

    • I am guessing the other three phones don't do 4K60? I solely record on that and would be a deal breaker for me. On my old Note 10+ 512gb.

      • Pixel 6 is the only one of those with 4k@60p, with beautiful quad bayer definition and low noise, but gimped to 90Mbps HEVC in GCam (Filmoric Pro can get bitrates to 500Mbps which actually looks stunning), but got to remember it's niche, most don't care :P

  • I have a pixel 6 and honestly a mid range phone would work just as well. The price difference is high for a few gimmicks.
