  • Is there a technical reason why (most of) these hubs have very short and/or permanently attached USB-C cable?

    • +1

Yes, the shorter the cable, the less likely you run into data issue. The non-technical reason is cost saving. Starting with USB 3.1/3.2 gen 2, the quality of cable starts to matter more.

Permanently attached USB-C cable: 2 reasons: (1) Apple's one is like that and (2) cost saving.

  • Can this power two external HDDs? Have done some searching but am unsure if a USB-C hub needs an external power supply to run external drives efficiently. Cheers

    • Most external HDDs have a figure 8 power jack, I don't think they can be powered off their USB connections.

The smaller actual portable hard drives that power off USB only should be fine. These hubs usually have like 80W input and as long as you use an external charger to charge the hub it should be fine.

If you plug the hub directly to your PC I think it should draw enough juice to run a hd but YMMV

    • According to the specs:

2* USB 3.0 ports: Data transfer speed up to 5Gbps & USB port power supply up to 4.5W

Problem is, is it 4.5W (0.9A) per port OR 0.9A for both ports?

    • Did a test with a different Hub, generally 2.5 inch HDDs don't need that much power. 4.5W might just be enough for two.

  • +2

30Hz @ modern screen resolutions? Sorry but this is useless, unless you want to connect it ten years ago.

    • 4K/30Hz. If it is 2K or below, it should be able to do 60Hz. However, it is not ideal for 4K.

    • +2

It's a laptop dongle, how many people realistically need their laptop at 4K 60 and are running it via a $40 usb C dongle?

The vast majority of users will either still be using sub 4K displays or likely not notice their laptop is running the 4K TV at 30hz. If you want more you probably have a GPU on there and it's got its own hdmi output.

      • The unusual part is 4K/60Hz version appears to be cheaper (I haven't tested it, but just going by what OP has posted). Obviously, the laptop needs to support USB-C/alt-mode (DP 1.4) otherwise you will be still stuck with 4K/30Hz. Also, the DP 1.4 based version doesn't have the VGA out (which I really doubt most people still use that).

If the laptop doesn't support DP 1.4 via USB-C/alt-mode, then do you gamble on getting the newer chipset and risk compatibility issue or buy the DP 1.2 version (which limits you to 4K/30Hz).

Then, there is the question of HDR, which DP 1.2 most certainly won't support. Then again, the tech side is a bit complicated due to these hubs, due to the need to provide USB 3.0 ports, had to half the bandwidth on the video side.

  • Would this be able to run Chromecast using the ethernet port? I have one at home that doesn't supply enough power to the Chromecast from what I can tell

    • Are you using the stock chromecast tv power supply? I had to get a bigger one to power the hub and chromecast, my Switch’s power supply works. I think that one is 40w.
Some hubs just don’t work and you need to look for chromecast tv supported.

      • Is there a list of what ones work. All the website seem to be pushing the ones that are 100 bucks.
I can't recall what power supply I used. It may have been the stock one.
I think I have a Dell tablet one at work I can borrow

        • +1

If you have a 60W USB-C power supply handy, then it is worth trying that. Some of these hubs take quite a bit of power and some can have uneven current reduction on certain voltage levels (e.g. 5V). However, if it is just Ethernet, it shouldn't take so much power.

          • @netsurfer: Cheers. Just want to connect the Chromecast to the hub and have ethernet connected. At worse I'll add a hardrive for the kids shows but tv has a USB drive for that

    • +1

      No -

*【Wide Compatibility】:DON'T work on the Google Chrome Cast TV
      * Can not work with Spotify and Netflix and Amazon Prime, Google Chromecast TV

  • Nice. Just what I was after

  • Got the item, it don't has split-screen mode at all. Connect both VGA and HDMI for two monitors, just 1080p 60HZ monitors. Only can detect one monitor for both two, and those two monitors only can display same simultaneously.
    Return it as defact now.
