Buying a Scooter to Keep up with Kids

Looking to get a push scooter, to keep up with the ids on their bikes.

Have a bike but dont like riding it anymore.

Recommendations? Of course, I dont want to spend that much - if I wanted to, I would go electric.

IMO stick with the bike. I’ve ridden scooters with the kids before and after about 100m they suck.

If you go electric be aware that in many areas they are sill illegal to ride.

      Agreed.
Your kicking leg gets tired quickly on a scooter and you're not a kid with unlimited energy to burn.
Bike is efficient and you already have one.

    • I disagree. I have had a scooter to ride with my daughter for the last few years… It's awesome. Regular $100 kick scooter from Amazon - It's lightweight, fast and folds up. I'd say, on average, we do 5-8km per trip on our scoot scoots.

I've tried using a (non-electric) kick scooter that I got from ALDI to catch up with young bike riders around Olympic Park. Ended up with extremely sore legs and it's also an extremely bumpy ride depending on the condition or surface of the roads / paths you're on.

  • Electric bike?
Don't like riding it isn't really a great reason if it's the most viable option.

Electric scooters as mentioned previously can be twitchy on some surfaces

  • What's your budget?

    Porque no los dos?

I got a Kmart $79 one, has a bouncy suspension which helps and I ride faster than my kid now. I find it fun. For $79 bucks I was surprised it cost less than my kids when I told my wife.

        Yep that exact one

        • How good is kmart! Wife asked me to research a light up foldable scooter for my 6yr old daughter, found this one: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/light-up-wheel-scooter/3058…

She vetoed it, saying it's too cheap so can't be good/safe…made me buy a $160 Globber one…why ask me then don't listen…🙄🤦‍♂️😭

          • @John Kimble: Haha yea, my son is on some $150+ globber (I dunno the cost and I don’t think my missus will tell me) and I’m on a Kmart.

But I’m not surprised, he wears $10+ Pokémon branded tees and I get the $2 clearance stuff haha.

    • I might purchase that scooter. Is it loud? as I'll have to ride at night for my commutes. Cheers

      • +1

yea, its rickety, low quality build

        • Oof, is it too loud to be an issue? I'll be on somewhat bumpy sidewalks also, may have to purchase a more expensive scooter then I guess

Kick scooters are good on smooth ground that is either flat or at a slight incline. Any steep or bumpy/off road stuff you'll likely have trouble keeping up with the kids!

  • There's a reason it is nearly impossible to find adult size scooters. They're not comfortable or efficient. Much better to ride a bike. If you don't want to ride a bike you'll really hate riding a scooter.

  • Scooters can outrun bikes but there are a few variables. 1. You need to have a fast foot. 2. Kids would need to be below 10 cause any older and they'll smoke you. 3. Surface needs to be smooth and the tyres of the scooter need to be smooth too! I have ridden a lot of scooters of different price points and usually what you're paying for is the quality of the tyres. Razor has good Rubbery tyres which go fast while cheaper ones have less durable tyres that rattle at high speeds.

    • Scooters can outrun bikes

Yeah maybe for kids on a 12" bike.
Once they hit a 16" or larger (and that's only 4-5 years old, not 10), good luck, they'll crush you if they're trying especially over any sort of distance!

  • cardio br0 cardio

    its rule number 1!

  • Age of the kids and where would you be riding?

Bought the Razor scooter air and it's been great. I'm about 198cm tall and it fits me perfectly.

Pro: Fits in our cars, can take anywhere. Air tyres are great. Smooth ride.

Con: it's low to the ground. Easy to bottom out on uneven surfaces. Need to watch for that. Not for speed.

As the kids grow, they have been using it as well.
