EGO vs Ryobi Line Trimmer

Tossing up between these two:
EGO ST1302E 56V 2.5Ah ARC-Lithium Cordless Brushless Power+ 330mm Line Trimmer Combo Kit
$399
https://sydneytools.com.au/product/ego-st1302e-56v-25ah-arcl…

Ryobi 36V 4.0Ah Brushless Line Trimmer Kit
$429
https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-4-0ah-brushless-line-t…

I also need to buy an electric lawn mower.

From what I understand EGO will be more powerful. But was leaning towards the Ryobi since its from Bunnings, and likely to be a better warranty experience compared to sydneytools (i'm assuming, I haven't dealt with sydney tools before, but bunnings is pretty easy going).

Not in an ecosystem already.

EDIT: Thanks everyone. Ended up getting the EGO. It's a beast. Love it.

  • have the ego ~ its good but more expensive to get batteries.

if you are already in the eco system, get ryobi.

I'm personally a Ryobi fan, but I've only heard good things about Ego! Interested to see what you decide!

  • I've had both. I was also quite deep into 36v Ryobi before giving up and moving to 56v Ego.

For 36/56v - Get the Ego - hands down.

Robi is still fantastic for 18v battery tools due to the Bunnings availability and warranty you mentioned, but power garden 18v gear is useless.

I would also avoid the one you linked and get a Powerload Ego trimmer instead - this pack is great value https://sydneytools.com.au/product/ego-stlb1521es-56v-25ah-3…

If you don't need/want the blower you can sell it on Gumtree for $150+ easily and spend the same as you were intending.

    • Be interested to know what Ryobi tools you had in the 36v range? (and if you live near me, can I have them? :) )

    • I have the OP linked EGO line trimmer and can confirm reloading is a right PITA

Ended up getting this, thanks for your suggestion!

  • I have the EGO power load and the lawn mower. They are fantastic with plenty of power given the 56v.

No experience with the Ryobi - but my neighbour has the 18v line trimmer and it sounds like a toy. Looking at his edges, it cuts like one too 😛.

    • Just bought a 18v ryobi trimmer, regret about it.

I got the blade head thinking to boost it's efficiency, it helped a bit but not much.
now, thinking to get a 56 Ego. As I have been spending way too much time trimming with the 18v trimmer, not to mention the endless pause to fix the trimmer line!

  • I haven’t used the ego but find my 36v Ryobi a little low on power. It does the job, but if I could have got an ego for the same second hand price I’d probably jump at that.

    Here's my experience:

I had a ryobi 1000w corded some 2014, does an amazing job and only recently retired it.
Tried the Ryobi HP 18v trimmer, dual line not single line (already in the 18v eco). Did ok but not as much power as the corded. Took it back.
Not being in the Ryobi 36v eco I took the time and compared. From what tools I would use not so much what they have available then though to value.

I only needed a trimmer now and will need a mower later. Compared the mower and trimmer of both brands and they both looked amazing in functionality.

Walked into Sydney tools, then the decision was made. I managed to pick up the very very last 380mm EGO line trimmer that came with 2 x 2.5ah batteries for $499!

Recommendation would be to take a real look at value and consistency of that value, you'll find pros and cons with the tools themselves but you really need to consider affordability of future purchases.

I'll reformat this when I'm on my pc

    • The ryobi 18v trimmer bought few weeks ago was so disappointing in performance, can I just take it back?

If you're going to get a mower too then I'd strongly consider going Ego over Ryobi. I've not used one yet but Ego get great reviews for their mowers and I plan to buy one when my electric mower eventually dies.

The kit linked by AaronR looks like great value. Definitely worth considering.

I have this https://sydneytools.com.au/product/ego-st1400est-power-56v-3… trimmer and it's been fantastic. Has a slight advantage (for me) in that handle height can be adjusted which is useful as my wife uses it too. Can recommend Powerload as a feature. I also have an Ego hedge trimmer and blower and they've both been great.

All their mowers come with a battery & charger so it could be better to buy the mower then get the trimmer as a skin only. And ideally buy during a redemption offer period and get a free bonus battery. You really do want 2 when using an electric mower. As an fyi, the 5ah battery is a bit heavy for use with the trimmer, it's designed for the 2.5ah for balance.

  • OP I have the exact Ryobi you have linked in your post. It is pretty good and once you get it work right it is pretty decent. It could use more grunt maybe on super thick, tough root like grass, but that could be more of a line trimmer issue than anything else. I also have the step down from the top of the line lawn mower. I can say I wish I could have afford the top one at the time, but again, once you know the Ryobi's limitations on the lawn mower you know what you need to do. Plus the 5.0ha battery is just right to get both the front and back lawns done. It is also not too heavy if you attach it to the line trimmer. But I've never run out of battery on the 4.0ha on the trimmer either!

Also be wary of people telling you that Ryobi is garbage. They are generally talking about the 18v stuff. The 36v isn't the perfect solution, but it is pretty good and if your batteries die within the first 2 years (or if their is an extended warranty) dealing with Bunnings for a new one is a breeze.

  • I'm thinking of getting a mover and blower 5.0AH kit. I want to also get a line trimmer. Anyone know if this means I will need different sized batteries? 2.5 v 5AH.

no all the batteries fit all the tools. depends on the size of your yard the 5.0 might be enough to do trim mow and blow.

  • Love my ego gear
got the mower & blower kit plus a trimmer kit with an extra battery. The battery redemption deal isn't on now thoug.

This deal isn't bad though. Comes with a blower too and the blower is awesome.

Thanks everyone. Ended up getting the EGO. It's a beast. Love it.

  • Interested in everyones views whether the ego powerload trimmers are heavy or not.

Seen conflicting info with weight ranging from 3kg upto 5.8kg (and thats without battery) on various sites.

Trying to decide between this or a makita 18v or 36v that are between 3.5kg-4.2kg weight inc 4ah battery.

Want to use as edger as well as trimming on thick grass for a medium front and small back lawn
