Advice on Gating off a Slim Driveway for a Back Unit?

I live in the back unit of a 2 unit development in the north-west of Melbourne, with a massive 18 meter long driveway leading into my property from the street, that I'd like to gate for both privacy and to make sure that our dog can't escape

It's on my title and there are no easements or shared spaces given the front unit has their own driveway, so shouldn't be any legal issues and the front neighbor is fine with it as long as it isn't too loud

However the driveway is only 2.5m wide from fence to fence, and is the only way to get in or out of the property by car or foot, so we're trying to find a swing gate that can be opened by remote and can also be opened by hand, but we're struggling to find anything

Assuming I'm just looking in the wrong places or using the wrong search terms, any advice on how I should get this done? And ozbargain bonus, what's the best way to cut costs for this?

  • Does the gate have to be at the front of the property? I lived in a battle axe block and the gate was level with the front properties' back fence.

    • Mostly want to fence off as much of it as possible to maximize the space our dog can run around in safely, as it's long enough to play fetch

      • And play cricket
        .

  • but we're struggling to find anything

Google search finds a whole stack of places who make them, though it's all semi-custom so you need to contact them for a quote

    • Can you post a few of those places? Or the search term you used?

Would consider a semi-custom, doesn't look like this is something mass-market

  • I think the problem is the motor is attached to the gate. So every time you wish to manually open the gate, you need to manually disengage the motor to open the gate. Similar to a remote controlled garage door. Otherwise have two parts. Remote swing gate wide enough for a car comfortably and a small manual swing part fixed to the other fence.

  • 2.5m already is pretty narrow, by the time you put in the gate mechanism and any supports you'll be fairly constricted, probably dropping down to at most 2.2m.

If possible as Mechz said, maybe a gate at the end of the long driveway (where it opens out into your block) would be better, and functionally not much different. Less of a run for power as well.
