Issue with eBay Purchase Due to Underpaid Postage

Hello,

I recently purchased an item on eBay end of December last year which is yet to be delivered. I am having difficulty picking up the item as the post office is closed (attempted multiple pick up times over last few days) and they are holding it inside rather than delivering it to my PO box. Have contacted the seller as originally was told by Auspost customer service via phone that the item is being held there because insufficient funds were paid for postage. It's been 16 days since item was sent from NSW to NSW location and about 5 days held at the post office.

What can I do about this item? Seller is not responding to messages and I requested a refund as the item most likely will just be sent back to them and I have lost the funds. Or is it more effective to do charge back on my Credit Card?

Thanks for advice on this.

Well at the very least until the item is returned and receipted to sender how do you expect them to refund?

As for a chargeback, that's not exactly going to be a 1 day affair. Id expect 2-4 weeks, or more with current conditions.

How much 'short' is the postage?

The Aus Post notification will advise how long they will keep the item for collection.

Also, check Aus Post branch opening hours as my local recently amended theirs and are no longer open on Sat.

    • Both times was during working hours before 2pm

    I requested a refund

    From the seller or eBay?

If you want to get a quick resolution just open an Item not received (INR) case with eBay.

As eBay always takes the buyer's side you'll get a refund.

Your Post Office will eventually return the item to the sender if there is a legible RTS address on the package.

    • From the seller, have yet to try ebay, thanks for the suggestion.
What reason did you write in the text?

Keep it short and sweet. Just say "Item not received".

        It's true.

If it's already 16 days there's a chance that the PO has already returned the package anyway. Depends on how busy they are.

        • I have put in a claim with ebay and for some reason instead of Ebay sorting it out, they sent this message to the seller, who has responded with the same message from over a week ago. And given them almost a week to reply before being able to escalate further. Is this a normal part of the process?
I had already attempted to contact seller for a refund, why would I need to recontact them, seems round about.

          • @sagrules: Standard procedure, it happens to everyone who makes a claim.

The drones at eBay aren't allowed to think, they have to follow their script, albeit a slow process.

            Just humour them.

            • @Hithere: The seller told ebay to put my item on hold because they are showing tracking its on the way to me. It is still stuck in a closed off post office. Another 4 day wait before i can continue the claim. How is this possible?

              • @sagrules: All is good.

It's normal to have that wait from the time a claim is started until eBay decides what action will be taken.

EBay will notify you of each step they go through until the claim is resolved. They rarely listen to what the seller says.

Happened to me before they try and get away sending small items that exceeds weight or size it's usually only a couple $$ and eBay sellers have always refunded me on two occasions

    • I cant even go inside post office to get the item, so its not relevant here

Get someone to pick it up for you… the back of the card used to have a space for giving someone else approval to pick it up

to me it sounds like you've had a change of mind on the item and just want your coin back.

        YMMV

        • Its not a change of mind, I have not received any notice only found out via ebay app.
As i said its been 16 days since order and needed it sooner

          • @sagrules: Currently 16 days is nothing.. i had one take over 3 weeks to go 21klms

            • @pharkurnell: Interesting how you say that, had something sent via Express from Melb on Tues, hasn't arrived. Had something sent by regular post from Sydney on the same day and it arrived today. Both to QLD

If you are not concerned about the additional postage cost, isn't the solution easy? Wait til the post office is actually open, and go pick it up.

        • I would prefer to avoid any unnecessary trips during COVID outbreak. Given its seller's stuff up for underpayment and delay in receiving item due to it not going to original PO Box address, I think i have grounds to receive a refund. Also, as mentioned I've already made 2 trips there during work hours to find it closed.

  • AusPost usually meant to chase the sender and still delivering it to the buyer with no extra cost.

  • Same happened to me and auspost said just come and collect it
