Recommendation for a Good Telescopic Fishing Rod

I need to buy a fishing rod for a friend in India, his preference is a telescopic type and has sent me this one as reference.

What would be the equivalent for this here, and anything which is better than this, I have no idea about fishing and I was looking at this one

any ideas!

EDIT— the main preference is ease of transport , could be telescopic one or the ones which come in few pieces.

  • What you're mate sent was a 4 piece, not sure if that was his intention.
It depends on how much you pay. I have a couple of telescopic rods.
One from Aliexpress and one from a mainstream brand (Daiwa). The Mainstream is holding up strong after 3 years while the Alixpress one is showing wear and tear.

I recommend just buying a known brand with the price point you're comfortable with. Looks like Anaconda has Shimano telescopic rods, I'd go with them.

    • What he wants is something than can be easily carried in a case

  • +1

Those rods are not the same. The one you have linked to Anaconda is a telescopic rod, that extends out of one single housing (the base) - like a telescope - to create the rod. The one your friend has sent you a link to on Amazon is a four-piece travel rod, with four separate sections that join together to create the rod, like how tent poles go together.

    If you want something similar to what your friend has linked to buy from an Anaconda store;

    3-piece spin rod (no case/cover)

    https://www.anacondastores.com/fishing/fishing-rods/spinning…

or this one on clearance (again no case/cover) - can't say I've heard of Rovex brand before…

    • He wants something thats easily transportable, like foldable. I thought the telescopic one would also serve the purpose and would be easier than to join separate sections

      • A 2-piece or 3-piece or 4-piece travel rod is very transportable. It's in the name! "travel rod"

Like the example that your friend showed, it pulls apart and fits neatly in to a little over shoulder case.

Multi-piece rods are the most common rod, and far more popular than a telescopic. It takes literally 5 seconds to connect the pieces. The one your friend has linked is quite a "light" and sensitive rod. Multi-piece rods are generally more sensitive than a telescopic.

  • OP, if you look at the original link you posted, on the right and down a bit there's a link to buy it on Amazon AU so given it's the exact same item I'd say it's the equivalent here. Doesn't look like good value to me though I know almost nothing about fishing. I still have the rod my parents bought me when I was around 6 and I remember I chose that one because I liked the colour.

  • I've had a couple of Silstar 2.1 meter 4 stage telescopic rods for years, great for light fishing, and I used to keep them in my car with a couple of reels and hooks etc., for 'just in case'.

I'd recommend Silstar as a good value brand to buy.

  • What's your budget? you probably want to stick to one of the main brands Shimano, Daiwa, etc. get something about $100 on special from bcf. the daiwa crest is one of the better cheaper combos perfect for smaller fish, squid etc. nice quality gear.

    • Thanks Let me have a look

  • You are wanting a travel rod - these are the ones that break down to multiple pieces and can be put away in a case. I'd go something like this https://www.anacondastores.com/fishing/fishing-rods/spinning…

Telescopics aren't particularly suited to modern styles of fishing where sensitivity is everything but if he's the type just to soak bait for a few hours or really does require the portability they do the job.

  • I caught 2 massive sharks on this bad boy right here https://www.kmart.com.au/product/jarvis-walker-focus-general…

  • Telescopic rods are crap compared to normal rods, so get one that has decent runners and is the length you want and is for the line breaking strain you want.

Saying that I have 2 for when I go on holidays and can't fit the ugly sticks in the car.

  • The Shimano telescopic rod combos can be found for an okay price.

    • I think I asked the wrong question, I need something which can be easily carried and packed up.

  • If you don't mind the wait for shipping, there are plenty of decent quality rods on AliExpress from Chinese companies. Kastking, Tsurinoya, Obei Hurricane are ones that have a good rep. Same goes for reels - smooth reels for a fraction of the price of a Daiwa / Shimano here in Aus.

I have the Kastking Blackhawk II telescopic rod fit with a Kastking Centron reel. Fits easily in my small hatchback. Looks pretty sleek and decent quality if you take care of it.

    • Do you mind sharing link for your Blackhawk

From the Kastking official store on AliExpress.

        • thanks mate, What is spinning and casting type?

          • @Ehty: Spinning rod fits a spinning reel. Casting fiots a baitcaster reel.
If your friend is a beginner start with spinning rod+reel - check out on youtube for the differences and purpose.

You can definitely go down the rabbit hole with fishing lol as I have. I'm still a beginner but I've sunk a lot of $ already into this hobby. Length and action of the rod & size of reel depends on the purpose. You'll also have to buy appropriate fishing line - braid + monofilament is a good way to start. Learn from youtube.

Also if you're giving it to your friend in India, mail it directly to them! Beats trying to fit a fragile fishing rod into your suitcase.

            • @JPossum: Thanks Mate, What spinning reel can I buy with this one!

  • I looked into telescopic but none were great, settled for 4 piece ugly stick with a small penn spin fisher.
