3 Phase Power Upgrade in South Australia

I'm looking at getting my power upgraded to 3 phase in SA and I have a few questions hoping fellow ozbargainers can help. Thanks in advance.

  1. My house has overhead service line like the one shown in diagram 3 shown in this doc from SA Power Network. Who is responsible for upgrading the line between the pole and the fuse box? https://www.sapowernetworks.com.au/public/download.jsp?id=31…
  2. The meter I have is a smart meter Itron ACE2000 SMB Type 292. Does it need replacing for 3 phase?
  3. This doc from SAPN states Multiphase upgrade AC109 is ~$1k, Does this include upgrading the line between the pole and the house and the fuse box? https://www.sapowernetworks.com.au/public/download/?id=31606…
  4. The line between the pole and the fuse box, does it get replaced with a 4 core cable or just add a separate 2 core cable to provide the additional phase?
  5. What is the typical cost for the upgrade, not including the SAPN fee?

I would call SA power and ask them.

    • This, as they'll give you a starting point.

Depends on distance fun from supply pole to house, suitability of existing meter box etc

In NSW I would expect an average cost of about $3k, but sa may have different supplier requirements and L2 elec rules.

Why you upgrading to 3ph would be one question

      • Why you upgrading to 3ph would be one question

        Toys in the mancave possibly?

        • Export more solar power or run a large air conditioning unit.

          • @JIMB0: With fit rates continually dropping, the export more solar power would be a questionable $ exercise.

As suggested above. Some considered info is below.

    1. Typically power company is responsible eg fig 3 advises "SA Power Networks Service Line" so I suggest they are.
    2. Yes.
    3. Likely yes.
    4. You need a new cable.
    5. Budget $6k with rms for surprises. You will need your electrician to run from the meter to the connection point and from the meter to your new (or if you are lucky modified) fuse box which has nothing to do with the fuse box you have referred to in fig 3. May need to balance the loads in the property between phases etc.. so it is more than having the truck on the street turn up.

    Good luck on your mission.

  • i upgraded mine a few years ago for about $1800 + SAPN fee's
    included:

    New switchboard out the front
Running cable from the new switchboard/enclosure to the old switchboard -10m

shouldn't cost more than another couple of hundred to rewire/split your loads over 3 phases.

    • Thanks. Is it necessary to install a new switchboard?

      • depends if your current switchboard is out the front of the house and easily accessible. mine was in the garage, SA power networks requires it out the front of the property not behind a fence (so side of house in front of gate is fine)

so the meter and isolator switch were put in the new switchboard, then a new cable was run to the existing switchboard in the garage.
