Mobile internet using Telstra router sim

We have Telstra modem and router that has mobile sim. Can I take the sim router with me to use when I’m travelling in Australia to for mobile wifi?

  • I don't think so. I have the same setup and don't think it'll work in the absence of the NBN box. That said, I have never tried doing what you are trying to do.

    • It works fine without the NBN box. You don't have to plug anything into it, other than power. It will work anywhere with reception, but it is against Telstra's ToS to take it traveling with you.

      • Thanks for clarifying!

Mobile wife can be temperamental so depends on which parts of Australia you would be travelling to. Generally areas with lots of shopping would work well.

    • You misread, he's travelling to find a mobile wife.

Worth checking your terms and service also, I think Optus told me if I used it outside my suburb location, they'd cancel my sim.

    • Ouch

  • if you have a smart modem gen2 with 4g backup it will work, but I've read from other users there's a limit to the data and speed. and i've tested just connecting the wan lan to my computer port and it works. reading as the NBN is down. but only tried and test it so not sure how long it will last.

but you'll definitely be able to use any Telstra data sim or any wholesale Telstra sim (such as Woolworths or belong) just need to add the data profile in settings.

the main reason I bought the modem is so I can use the belong as my home internet and can be taken on the go even though it's a little big. as got plenty of data from the triple data offer last year. or you can buy it fairly cheaply on here as well. hope it help!

    • Very helpful thanks
