Painting with Help of a Computer - Solved!

Hi All,

I am buying my own home soon and need some paintings.

My plan is to use some photos which are important to me and then trace them out on canvas etc and then fill it using oil paint or watercolour.

For some reason, I cannot find any reddit post/Youtube video etc for the steps. Any help would be appreciated!

TIA!

Just an idea - purchase a projector and project the photo onto the canvas and trace. Here's a site with some instructions: https://www.art-is-fun.com/art-projector

    • This would help for sure.

      My current plan was.

Print an image on transparencies in A4 size sections.
Use pins etc to mark the outlines on canvas
      Paint

  • You should stylise them first Ruth photoshop (make them a bit blocky with obviously wrong colours, Andy warhol style). It isn't likely to turn out well if you try to make them realistic as your colours will be slightly off and you'll make people or animals look like they're gravely ill or just look "wrong".

Or just print to canvas at Big W or Harvey Norman. Much easier, cheaper, less time consuming and you'll get a better result.

If you have a big-screen TV, you could trace off the screen and transfer the tracing onto your canvas.
You could use greaseproof paper (also called waxed paper or baking parchment) to do the tracing. Use a soft 2B pencil or a waterbased felt tip and do not press hard or you could mark the screen. Tape sheets of the greaseproof paper together if it is a large picture.
Then use carbon paper underneath your tracing to transfer the image onto your canvas. Yes, you'll have to go over every line again, and move the sheet of carbon paper around until the entire image is copied. A large canvas stretched on a frame might not take the image well, it might work better on canvas board.
This would be a cheaper option than buying a projector, but it depends on having a big TV that will show jpegs.

    • I have a laptop connected to my TV.

I will make smaller paintings for now. First painting would be a Eucalyptus tree and next would be a Coconut tree.
