Should I Link My Visa Giftcard to My PayPal?

This might seem like an interesting/dumb question to some people but I'm literally a boomer with PayPal. Only been using it for under two years because a colleague convinced me to haha.

So I was just wondering whether it is a good idea to link my Visa Gift Card to my PayPal? i.e. would have my PayPal account "exposed" be better than just using the card itself or is this not a concern?
Maybe it's just I don't fully understand how PayPal works. I guess worst-case scenario I lose $500 but I'm just wondering.

From my understanding is that the safety with PayPal is that you only link your credit card to your PayPal wallet meaning only PayPal knows the info and when you buy things it goes through the PayPal portal thingo so the amount of money gets sent from my PayPal to the website's PayPal so your credit card info is never shown and thus protected. The only thing that gets revealed I guess is name, address, and number. Also with PayPal, it's easier to get your money back and have like 8 free returns or something.

So my account being exposed isn't an issue? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks.

That used to be one of PayPal's selling points, the fact the person receiving money only knows your email, and whatever other details you provide, and not the Visa's number. PayPal disputes are generally easier, and faster, especially if the other party doesn't reply.

You don't get free returns, you pay for the return shipping, and then get reimbursed. Other than that, you understand how it works just fine.

There is a risk of your PayPal account being compromised. Most likely someone getting access to your password, which would then mean you could lose the $500, yes.

    • So am I right to believe that having my PayPal account exposed is a not an issue because payments are within the PayPal portal

Simply exposing the name of your email account though does not compromise your PayPal account, or risk you losing any money. There's nothing anyone can do just knowing your email. They would also need to know the password, or have access to your email to reset the password.

If you're super paranoid about it, you can remove your prepaid Visa card each time, and only add it in when you want to make a payment. That would mean anyone that gains access to your PayPal account can't use the Visa card.

I also wanted to add that the shipping returns will only reimburse you up to $45 per return, although most shipping is usually under that.

        • No not paranoid I have a couple of personal credit/bank cards in there, just had a random thought and assumed that it was because I'm new to PayPal but I guess it's nothing lol. I use 2FA so all g.

If prepaid id just use it plain

If sites allow it I always use PayPal as a protective layer. I’m also lazy as hell and PayPal a lot of the time saves me typing all my details in.

  • I doubt Paypal will even let you link a visa gift card
