Rice Cookers - Breville

Hi all,

Looking to buy a rice cooker. I have to choose betwee the Breville Rice box for $103 at amazon or the Breville smart rice box for $159. Never used one before but basically want to use it for a bit more healthy meals so ideally steaming some veggies with the rice. I don't see the benefit of the smart version but then again there's not much mentioned of the differences. Note this is for me and 2 kids.

  • One is smart, the other is not. Based on reviews, you would be smart to buy the cheaper one.

    • The smart looks like there is more options judging by the picture of the menu panel.

Buy the cheap decor $15 rice cooker that goes in microwave. I detest rice cookers, huge single use appliances when the microwave does much more.

I guess it depends on how much value you put on rice. A toaster & kettle also match your logic but most kitchens in Australia have them. They also perform their respective functions very well.

Also, I'm not saying you're wrong, but some people (myself included) eat plenty of rice dishes so a rice cooker may be worth it.

I'd like to try rice from a microwave rice cooker though, as I've heard it's good.

      • Please don't boil your water inside a toaster.

Note this is for me and 2 kids.

You are not going to get that out of a little decor

      • We use a pyrex bowl and the instructions from our microwave re rice/water ratio - always turns out lovely and fluffy.

I can vouch for Panasonic rice cookers. I trust them more than Breville. This is what I would buy:

My rice always comes out perfect.

I would trust any Asian branded rice cooker over a white branded rice cooker any day.

  • I had a Panasonic one that died, and I replaced it with the Breville Smart.

It’s fine, rice comes out perfectly. Haven’t tried the other functions though. I got mine from Myer a couple of years ago for $90ish

  • Got the Smart one. Works really well. Rice always comes out nice :) Can't comment on the dumb version unfortunately.

Does it have to be Breville? As others have recommended, Panasonic make great rice cookers.

I've used this one for about 5 years now and haven't had an issue - https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/panasonic-5-cup-rice-cooker-s…
It was about $220 brand new when i got it.

Difference between smart and not smart is the 'Fuzzy Logic Chip' used in smart cookers. That is the actual term used for the technology, basically its able to make decisions based on multiple variables that are more precise. A standard chip may just go "is it hot or cold? A: Hot, turn off unit". A fuzzy logic chip will be like "on a scale of 0-10, how hot is it? A: 6, keep the unit on".

It will also take things into account like pressure 0-10, weight 0-10 and things like that, it combines the answers to all those scales in real time and comes up with decisions on the fly on whether to heat up, cool down, maintain, turn off, etc. This is why rice comes out better in Fuzzy logic cookers.

  • The Breville smart rice box is very good. We have one but don't use it often as it's a large 10 cup. Only use it for parties now I purchased the Xiaomi.

We use our Xiaomi Mi Induction Heating Rice Cooker more frequently as it's smaller- 5 cups.

    Can recommend both.

The coating on the pot of the Breville smart rice box is better than the Breville rice box.

I've also used cheap $13 Kmart ones and various Panasonic/Tiger rice cookers, my favourite would be the Xiaomi Mi Induction.

Having said that- if I had to buy one today, I'd get the Aldi digital rice cooker- https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-29-…

  • Tx for the comments. It doesn't have to be a Breville, just read some reviews and people recommended them. Did see that Tiger seems to be the best but its also not that cheap. I don't mind splashing the cash at it but I would prefer to first see if its something I will be using or not. I do enjoy the air fryer but its not always the healthiest food and it does limit you when you get to stuff like rice, veggies etc. Just looking for a easy way to make healthy side dishes and a rice cooker seems to be good (I'll also try to make "mieliepap" in it which is a kind of South African porridge but no idea if it will work hahaha. The method is the same so I'll find out lol.)

Does the fuzzy logic make a big difference?

I bought this multifunction rice cooker at Aldi early 2021 with $59!? quite cheap compare with my old Tiger cooker ($330), so we use this and keep Tiger as spare. Turn out this Aldi works very good and we have nothing complaints so far, it also can cook crispy rice. The only thing is we have to turn off after the rice cooked if we don’t want get rice burn from the bottom overnight.
Purchased in January 2021 for $58.
