  • Are there any automatic watches in their lineup?

    • +2

nope. I wish they had some. The faces are real nice but feel like they belong with an automatic movement to really give it a classic feel.

      • Agreed. Personally prefer automatics, so that rules me out as a potential customer.

    • +2

They do have automatics in their catalogue - like the Chelsea https://www.melbournewatch.com.au/collections/chelsea/produc… and the Portsea https://www.melbournewatch.com.au/collections/portsea/produc…. But these aren't on sale.

      • Thanks for the links. Not really enamoured by those dials (bit busy), or the price.

Agree with @Drakesy below, that there is better bang for buck to be had with mainstream brands for automatics.

Don't really need any more watches, but always interested to at least have a look at what the micro-brands offer, especially if in the rare category of being local.

        • +2

If you like local microbrands here's a few! Erroyl (Canberra-based) https://www.erroyl.com/ and Haigh & Hastings (Perth-based) https://www.haighandhastings.com/. Erroyl has watches on sale for 25% off.

          • @TheNewDeal: Thanks, some pretty elegant, decently priced offerings from both.

With mostly WFH now though, most in my already too large watch collection aren't getting much wrist time, so hard to justify expanding :-(.

Worth bookmarking both for the future though. Cheers.

I'd save my money and get a citizen tissot or even a seiko.

    • +1

Agreed, at these "discounted" prices you wouldn't even need to save much, a seiko 5 can be had for cheaper!

      • I remember talking to a watchmaker and the movements in these cost something like $1.50 to manufacture and the case/materials another $5-$10.

Genius business model if you can find enough gullible fashionistas.

        • -2

I hope you don't apply this logic to all products. There is more to a watch than the sum of its parts and the individual cost of each part. These aren't crappy rebranded AliExpress watches mate. As a micro-brand, MWC have a good reputation amongst watch collectors.

          • @ilikeit: Sorry that's for the classic Daniel Wellingtons etc.

These would be marginally more looking at the case quality. But still a 50m water resistance, quartz movement and brand that's only been around for 8 years doesn't exactly scream quality, at the end of the day that's what you're paying for.

A bit like Hublot, zero heritage and innovation/technology. Admittedly their automatics look the goods, just don't think they're worth anywhere near what they're asking.

Oh forgot to add another $10 on for the fancy box.

Wouldn't even need to save, you can easily buy a nice watch in Citizen/Seiko at the $200-$300 ballpark.
