Would You Trust This Microsoft Adapter (Surface Pro 8)

Hi all, interested to hear everyones thoughts. I just purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 to replace my older Surface Pro 5. The second or third day I was charging the Surface Pro 5 using the Surface Pro 8 adpater/charger while I reformatted it.

Part way through I started to notice my text on the left looked a bit curvy. Spun the screen around a bit and noticed the battery is quite literally expanding/exploding from the side.

I ripped the adapter out and it seemed to stop the expansion straight away but I quickly shut down the laptop.

Now I'm too scared to use it anymore, and Microsofts response was "All brand new chargers have been meticulously tested its quality to make sure it will not cause anything."

Call microsoft and ask for for a replacement as it's dangerous and may catch fire and you bought it less than 7 days ago (if you post is correct) and you want it replaced ASAP or go into the physical MS store if you are in Sydney tomorrow and get it looked at::

I believe the device battery has a problem, the charger imo is not the issue.

    • So much this.

    • Could be the case, though works perfectly until then. My worry is the charger also makes my Surface Pro 8 really hot, so I've just been charging with USB C instead. But that might be normal as the Pro 8 does has a fan now.
I was formatting the Surface Pro 5 too, so it may not have tripped any battery safety features due to it, so battery had an issue?

It is a physical issue with the battery. I've had old iPhones swell up while kept on a shelf for few months.

You could try to replace the battery now yourself if you can find replacement battery for a reasonable price, just be very careful so you don't hurt yourself or burn down your house while removing the battery :P

  • Nvm I misread.

Uh…you may have done a booboo if you charged the 5 with the 8's adapter.

You took a device which the standard charger supplies total wattage 44w and fed it a toasty 65w
Battery in the device has the problem. Or am I missing something here?

    • I've been told if they fit they will work online, conversely the Surface Pro 5 charger will also charge my Surface Pro 8 (though it slow charges). This was confirmed when i asked support through their online chat. Though there is the possibility they didn't understand (their English was very bad)?

Using a 65W power supply for a device that only requires 44W won't matter as long as the voltage are the same.

However using a 45W power supply for a device that requires 65W can be bad for the power supply as it may over heat.

Nothing wrong with your adapter, your battery is stuffed and is swelling while being charged. Common fault on these.

    • It's rare to find a Surface Pro 4/5 that doesn't have a swollen battery these days.

    microsoft support is the worst.

Yeah, interestingly it seems like they use a similar Philippine Support service that I've heard from I think telstra and iinet and others before. So it doesn't seem to be different to other companies (I expected them to have an in country support service I guess due to their pricery product).

That's the fault of the battery. There should be power managment and regulation circuitry in the device.

  • Microsofts response was "All brand new chargers have been meticulously tested its quality to make sure it will not cause anything."

If that was the case Microsoft would have zero returns for its chargers, something which I highly doubt.

    • Yeah, its not like they've ever had issues with their chargers or cables or anything… oh wait…
