Return Flights Melbourne to LA in April 2022

After enduring all these lockdowns, it’s about time I got out of Melbourne to see the world. I have accommodation already lined up for USA, but the missing puzzle piece is the flights.

I’m hoping my fellow OzBargainers and seasoned travellers can help me out with some advice. I will be travelling in April…yes I know this is one of the most expensive times due to school holidays. For Melbourne ~ Los Angeles return in April, should I buy flights now or wait to see what happens in the next few weeks? I’m not happy with prices at the moment, but worried that they might rise further. I definitely want a flexible ticket - should there be some sort of travel ban or lockdown here or at my destination, I wanna be able to postpone the trip to later in the year.

If this all goes to plan it’ll be one of the biggest trips, furthest I’ve been on. Haven’t travelled much before so this is a huge deal, and my budget is stretched already so I’m really hoping on saving something on airfare!

So, looking forward to hear about what others see in their crystal ball ; what would be the lowest prices to expect for flexible Melbourne ~ LA return in April?

QF recently announced a 'Fly Flexible' policy which sounds like it should cover you, so I would just be looking to purchase the cheapest current ticket with them that receives the benefit of that policy.

Not sure if VA has a similar policy or not.

    • Thanks djkelly69 , I wasn't aware of their fly flexible policy, I'll keep an eye on the QF flights.

Have you had COVID already or waiting till you get there to catch it?

    • Not yet, holding out for the complete covid experience in LA…

I'm currently in the USA - I flew Fiji Airways - Melbourne > Nadi > LAX. If you are stretched for cash, I probably wouldn't recommend the USA.
COVID is verrrrry visible here. If people can leave the house they will - whereas in Australia people generally isolate when they have symptoms.

If I dont get COVID - I will be surprised. But if I do get it, I have to wait 14 days before Australia lets me back in.
My work will pay for my accommodation - if I wasn't here for work I would not re-attend in the current times.

    • Thanks for the reality check about what it's like over there in the USA at the moment.
I was just wondering how much it could improve by April - there has already been a relaxing of rules just recently, so that those who contract COVID while overseas will be allowed to return home 7 days after they test positive, down from the existing 14 days.

Yeah they have welcomed the 7 day wait time which is very helpful. I only found out about this yesterday, it definitely makes the trip much more do-able.

Maybe if cases die down it could be alright? I am here at quite literally the worst time during the pandemic. Everything changes day by day, i waited until the day before my flight before making a decision on whether i was even going to come. Tbh i generally travel quite a bit and im unlikely to leave australia again this year, the world just isnt ready to live with the rona yet.
