Carbon road bike Avanti Giro ER-C

I am looking forward to buy my first carbon road bike, mostly for 2-3 hours weekend ride…

Any feedback on the quality of Avanti bikes?

  • Avanti bikes are a good brand, but I think you need to go try a number of bikes and find what suits you better.

You might find a different brand has a better geometry suited to you.

The only thing I have found with Avanti is they do a bit of mix and matching with components.

For example, that bike you linked, I find it weird that it has an Ultegra rear deraileur. Dont know why they wouldnt just go full 105 all over.

Is there any disadvantage of this mix and match?

Nah I mean Ultegra is better than 105 - so winning for you. They perform very much the same, just Ultegra is lighter I believe.

It just seems weird to do everything in one range and then this one component as a different range.

But they are the experts :)

That’s a really common sales tactic. Rear derailleur stands out to the eye and they save on other parts. ‘This bike has ultegra’ sounds better despite it not being full ultegra.

Most brands these days are fine (for the same level componentry). As Fergy said, find one that is comfortable for you. 105 is fine at a minimum. Why a pure road bike? If I had my time and money again I would get another gravel bike. If you get a grx 2x you give up a little top end speed(only noticeable going downhill unless you are a sprinter), have better gears for climbing and can put on wider more comfortable rubber (as well as skinny 25-28s if you really want). Having a gravel bike opens up so many more opportunities for adventure and riding on lower traffic roads. (currently love my trek checkpoint alr, and also have a carbon di2 focus for road).

And the ultegra mech rear is just for marketing. If you had to choose, get an ultegra brifter and 105 derailleur (its in the brifter you will notice any quality gains, not the dumb mech).

    • Why a pure road bike?

99% of my rides are on paved trails eg. Koonung creek trail, Dandenong creek trail etc.

      • For my trail rides with the fam a gravel bike would probably be better suited over my roadie, something with a 28-32mm tyre. If you looked at the right kind of gravel bike you could swap out a set of road oriented tyres when it suited as kwailo was saying.

        Food for thought.

I bought exactly same bike 2 months ago and have been quite happy.
Yes, it's a bit unusual to put Ultegra derailleur with shimano 105 groupset but they are 100% compatible. If anything, it saves you some weight.
Speaking of weight, although it is a carbon bike it weighs 9.5kg (with pedals), not super light. I think the bulk might be coming from the wheels which I think I'll be replacing soon. Wheels aren't tubeless ready and tyres are not top quality unfortunately, but I guess you get what you pay for.
If that's what your budget allows for a carbon bike, go for it, it is a great value for money. Alternatively, you may choose to stretch a bit more and get a Canyon or a Giant to get better components overall. However, I have to say bikes are really hard to come by these days, everything seems to be out of stock.

  • Just make sure it fits nice.

Nothing wrong with Avanti. Was looking at them a few years back and came very close to a purchase (just ended up with a better deal on another brand), but would consider again if/when I'm next in the market.

Usual disclaimer on carbon vs. alloy … do you really want carbon, noting that it can be a more costly long term choice for little added benefit for the recreational cyclist?

Avantis are a great bike, owned one as my first ever road bike and loved it.

At this level you can't really go wrong weather on a Giant, Merida, Cannondale or Trek. All entry level carbon is similar in stiffness.

If you're not dead set on a brand new bike you can pickup some pretty decent deals on marketplace or gumtree, but then you have to know what you're looking for.

  • My first road bike was an Avanti Giro C2 (Shimano 105 with rim brakes) that I bought in 2019. It's a great bike and definitely gave me a good impression of the brand.

My sister rides it on her daily commutes now - bought her a pannier rack.

I upgraded to a higher spec bike of another brand, but only because it was on sale and nothing to do with Avanti.

  • avanti is ok. nothing wrong with it. probably best to look at all the different brands too and find the one that fits your the best.
