UPS for Game Consoles: Pure or Simulated Sine?

Hey all,

With the current deals on UPS’ I am looking to get one for my PS5 and Xbox. What would be best for them? Pure or Simulated Sine waves? Getting some contradictory information on Google.

Thank you

  • Pure sine wave all the way! Its the same style of 'power' that comes out of your powerpoint, so why wouldn't you want to use that compared to Simulated Sine. Which is a 'cheaper' way of inverting power.

    • +2

why wouldn't you want to use that compared to Simulated Sine

Because it costs more and does nothing for running a console?

      • It is 'cheaper' for a reason, lots of devices don't like running on the choppy modified sine wave and can fail earlier etc. But YMMV and each to their own.

The OP wanted to know which one would be BEST, and the BEST one is pure sine wave.

  • Best? Pure.

Affordable and likely good enough? Simulated/modified but will increase the load of the PS5 psu and potentially reduce the life of it.

    Upto you.

  • You do not need a UPS for game consoles. You do need a suitably specced surge protector to plug them into though.

    • If my ps4 gets switched off at the power it can take an hour to rebuild the database. Perhaps this happens regularly to Morien?

      • Is that what they think utility blackouts are?

      • An hour?? Wow.

  • Thanks for your replies, everyone. If I do decide to get one, it sounds like Pure is the way to go. I've got a Simulated, but it is for low power (under 100w) devices. This will just be to ensure enough time for a proper shutdown. I have few power dropouts, however have had to redownload everything on my PS5 at least once since November 2020.
