Parallels 17 - Can Anyone Do Better than The Upgrade Price? ($71.45)

I need to buy Parallels for my kid's laptop for school (they're using a M1 Mac, so want to run Windows 11 ARM on it) and don't want to go down the pirate/trial hack route.

I had purchased parallels in the past and so I qualify for the upgrade price ($71.45) and I don't want to get the subscription price - which is an annual fee. My kid doesn't need it as it's only for occasional Windows usage.

I've tried VMWare and I've seen there is UTM but I'd rather get something that has more support because I don't want to have to deal with issues for them.

Thanks in advance!

  • If you’re a teacher you can get it a little cheaper, but it’s a yearly price of $49.99 (last year). Then you need to have the Windows licence as well - I pay for that each year too, bringing the total cost to about $80 per year to use Windows on my Mac. I only need it for one important website that refuses to work on anything but Internet Explorer.

    • Yeah I looked at the edu price (partner is a student), but I'm hesitant to pay the yearly licence. Do you think the yearly upgrades are worth it?

      • I use Parallels with my Mac and I haven't needed the yearly upgrades for it. Just do the once off payment.

  • There is also crossover which can run some windows apps cheaper.

  • Not sure if it will work though why not

Or VMware workstation used to be free

Thanks! I don't believe VirtualBox supports M1/ARM yet - and VMWare didn't fully support Windows 11 ARM when I was testing it.

        Correct.

I used the upgrade price on a very old Parallels licence (surprised it even let me)… $71.45 is the best I could find for a perpetual licence. All the coupon codes/offers out there seem to be for the annual subscription model which at best is still circa $50 p/a anyway so may as well spend a little more and get the perpetual licence. I've been pretty happy with Parallels on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro and it works well. I didn't need the better editions since I am happy with only 4 virtual CPU cores (and this is not an issue if you have a non-Pro/Max M1).

  • I don't want to have to deal with issues for them.

    Then get a Windows computer.

    • haha. This is why I bought a Mac!

      • should've done your research first then…

  • Go the crack route
