eBay and foreign currency purchase

Hi all,

I'm planning to buy something from an overseas ebay vendor.

I usually purchase gift cards from SB to claw back that little bit of money, plus the standard cashback. I'm thinking the gift card route won't work with foreign currency purchase and therefore I should just stick with an fx-free card. Am I correct or is there another way?

Thanks.

  • Are you buying through the .au ebay site? I bought something from America and used my Australian ebay cards. With the conversion rates it probably cancels out almost.

  • NO DONT buy AU eBay giftcards, you cannot use them in a different currency I think.
You are best to use something like e.g. UK eBay Gift card on ebay.co.uk website, BUT honestly If that was me getting an item from overseas is a big enough risk for me already, so I would always USE PAYPAL and Combined with a good Bank CC/DC like ING Visa Debit card (for no foreign currency charge) or like some other Credit card for credit card points, (AND INSURANCE)

  • Thanks, all. Looks like plain vanilla cashback and FX-free card is the only option here.

Gee, I haven't been watching but USD to AUD conversion rate really sucks right now.

  • You CAN use eBay AU$ gift cards on eBay.com.au to purchase items in foreign currency.

BUT, you’re at the mercy of their currency conversion rate, which is usually not good. You also run a much higher risk of not receiving an international item and having to be refunded back to the gift card.
