Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross - Anything better in price range?

Thinking of buying the base model Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ES. 31.5k new.

Any thoughts on it? I've found heaps online about the Outlander, but the Cross doesn't seem to be mentioned as much. Also don't see too many on the road.

Was considering a RAV before too, base models at 38.5k. Couldn't justify the extra price.

Any other base model mid size suv to consider in the price range? Others like the tuscon, sportage, forester are all also around the 38k range. But wondering if they are worth the extra few grand in comparison.

  • Not the same size as Most medium SUVs, might even be classified as small SUV. Try KIA Niro

    • Niro starting at 40k

    Haval Jolion

  • It sits in a pretty niche size.

Mazda cx30, is pretty much the only real competition.

try Suzuki Vitara Turbo. You should get it for around 32-33K. Spacious inside. And above all not a CVT

Really good engine, All Tech, Super reliability and round 7L/100 even in urban area. Around 5.5L for Highway.

Down side - not an appealing cabin, no digi speedo

Or take look at MG - Don't listen to haters. They are good cars.

When I tested I started with the haval and after it the mg felt cheap. Ymmv

  • This is what I'd be getting:

i am waiting for its updated 2022 modal with increased range.

      • Oops yeah that is the one I would get - the new model with the Long Range battery.

Looks to be really really good according to all the overseas reviews of it. I saw some guy do a 900km journey in one day, with charging not being an issue at all. 900km is more than I want to drive in one day!

i generally dont like that thing where people go… buy a hatch instead of a mini suv

like hiow people insist on a 1998 camry corolla but in this case… i cant imagine a $25k driveaway Kia Cerato as anything worse than whatever the hell an eclipse cross is

i have a huge disdain for most mini suvs but thats what it is now… people want them, companies know that and now mini suvs cost as much as a compact suv costs now

then again i dont think hatches are even $25k driveaway anymore

  • Pre-order a Corolla Cross

  • Small cars are better value than small SUVs if you're that worried about the price.

  • Your question should really be… Is there anything with a better warranty for the $ in this price range?

    • i think mitsu has 10yrs, kia has 7?

      • 10 years warranty has servicing conditions attached

        • Yep getting reamed by the dealer servicing for the whole 10 years

  • The only feedback I can offer is… Mitsubishi are good with warranty issues when you're within the warranty years/km, but just step 1 minute or 1km outside of it and they'll tell you to go jump.

    • That was not my experience, albeit my issue was back quite a few years. My 380's LHS rear window dropped into the door frame and couldn't be wound up - the car was six years old at this point and I was expecting to pay for the repair but they fixed it under warranty - they told me that firstly it was a known issue in the model (true - the RHS rear window had done the same thing a few years earlier) and secondly that I had bought it as a demo model, and the warranty didn't start until the car was transferred into my name when it was a year old. That was just so surprising - usually the warranty commences upon first registration, whether by dealer or first owner, and this car wasn't a demo but was the loan car they gave to people whose cars were in being serviced. So I cannot complain about Mitsubishi warranty issues.

      • Have a late model outlander. A few hundred km out of warranty I decide to investigate a strange engine noise (it got worse). I find out it is a known issue with my particular engine, by Mitsubishi (there's even a revised bunch of parts to solve the problem, so they know fine well), and it was making this noise for the last few services at the dealer. They even admitted to being embarrassed they didn't pick up the issue when it was there for servicing, previously.

They didn't want a bar of it. Unbelievable.

I had to go to the office of fair trading and put a cat amongst the pigeons.

After a lot of drama, with the vehicle going back and forth for diagnosis… they folded and said they would do it, but I'd have to wait several months for parts. I said bs, and asked them to give me all the part numbers. Within the day, calling other dealers around QLD, I sourced the parts and my local dealer had them delivered to themselves to complete the job asap. Yet another embarrassment for them.

I could go on but you get the idea. I have more stories. It's been an ongoing saga with them.

I had the dealer provide itemisation of everything, just for my records and proof of work and parts etc, it was 6k all up.

Can I ask which generation Outlander is this, and which engine and drivetrain?

          • @dazeet: ZK, 2017, 4WD, 2.3 litre 4N14 diesel with 6 speed torque converter auto.

            • @Oofy Doofy: Thank you very much for sharing that info - much appreciated.

In your time, grateful if you can PM me more about this, in terms of how to tell which 4N14 has the revisions done, and which 4N14 already comes revised from the engine plant, in order to avoid a similar issue.

Was thinking of an ASX manual that runs a smaller diesel engine, but will have to do more research on that and see if that may have issues as well.

              • @dazeet: You'd have to get the VIN of the specific vehicle, then call Mitsubishi and ask directly.

All diesel engines will get cracking around the exhaust manifold. Easiest way to check is to turn the enginr on, then smell for exhaust coming from the engine directly. Otherwise turn on fresh air and keep your nose open while sitting and driving in the cabin. The sniff test helps. Getting the exhaust manifold out and refitting is no easy task, and about $800 in labour, whether it be the ASX or Outlander.

        • Your experience with this dealer makes frustrating reading.

While AFAIK dealers generally make no money doing warranty work (they can only claim costs from the parent company), what you've experienced seems downright unhelpful and embarrassing, and is the polar opposite of my experience with a different dealer years ago. Hopefully you will be treated better by a different dealer in future!

    Yaris Cross?

  • +1

As someone else has said, the Eclipse Cross is a small car. Go look at one in the flesh. It's tiny compared to something like a RAV4 or Forester and you'll fit half the stuff in.

What do you need the car for? Why can't you get a Cerato or similar if a small car (like the Eclipse) is ok?

    • I +'d your comment, but they actually stretched the dimensions a bit, a little while ago, because of the underwhelming cargo capacity of the original release vehicle.

      • Oh true? That's fair, I'd have to have a look at one closely - I can't imagine it made an enormous difference though…

        • 14cm longer I think.

Cargo capacity should now be around 405L with 2nd row seats up, and around 1149L with the 2nd row seats down.

The 2nd row seat backs can be adjusted angle-wise, but the row itself no longer slides fore and aft per the pre-facelift model to optimise leg room and cargo space.

  • Some say Mitsubishi is a bit bland, old tech etc. don’t let that stop you, they are generally decent transport with decent reliability.

Go to a few dealers. Sit in things that take your fancy. Then test drive some.

If you are lucky you have a few brands in close proximity and can wander around a few and narrow down what to test drive in a day.

Also try google. Type in ‘favourite model’ then ‘vs’ and see what reviews pop up. They should give you models to compare in the same size.

Does anyone owe you a 10 second car by any chance?

  • I have a eclipse cross 2018 model. Very happy with it. Turbo 1.5 ltr very sprightly and the 18 inch wheels handle bumps and potholes well. Had a 2015 cerato, good car, but no comparison to the eclipse.

    • Is CVT ok or slow on acceleration with that out of touch feeling as some reviewers say?

      • They're all going to feel like that without a separate launch gear, it's just something you have to keep in mind while driving.
