TV for basic usage - beginner question

Hey there,

Pretty broke uni student who hasn't had a tv for 5 years and barely knows what smart tvs and tv tech is so bear with me for a second: Recently moved to a new place and have enough for at least a decent second hand TV (probably in the 40-50 inch category). Main uses would be for watching Optus Sport, some movies and TV shows (which I usually buy online from Youtube or find on Netflix/Stan). I don't really watch the main TV channels unless it's sport. I also have an xbox one sitting pretty much unused - am I right in saying I could use the xbox one (via hdmi cable) as a smart tv for my needs (seeing as it has wi-fi connection and can download apps like Netflix) and save myself a few hundred dollars to get a non-smart TV? Not sure if I've missed something. Then there's all the technologies for the screen - but I assume since apps like Optus Sport and Netflix don't go above 1080p that I don't really need to worry about LEDs and any of that - just HD will do.

Thanks for the help in advance - sorry mods if this isn't the right place.

Netflix does 4K. You can get budget 4K displays nowadays but if you just want cheap as possible then a 1080p panel will do fine. Yes you can use your Xbox One as a media centre to negate need for Smart TV features. Check if Optus have an app on Xbox. If not, you can always get something like a Fire TV stick to add capability to a non-Smart TV.

    • Yep Optus has an app on xbox so looks like this is going to work.

Just get a cheap second hand 1080 tv from Gumtree or FBM and use your Xbox for running streaming apps via HDMI.

    You'll be fine. Don't stress.

I don't really need to worry about LEDs and any of that

On the other hand you are very much correct.

    • Yep looks like I'll be doing this, thought I was missing something for sure.

A smart TV runs apps like Netflix. All TVs sold today are smart TVs, JB Hifi and the like don't even bother stocking 1080p dumb TVs.

Do you have a pc or laptop? A lot of these things can stream from a pc. Or you could use a monitor as a screen with hdmi input.

    • Yep that's what I've been doing for ages, just wanted to create a separate space from my work desk - my monitor's 32 inch as well so would be nice to get a separate watching TV between 40 to 50 inches. But I think from the responses I'm essentially just getting a bigger TV that can take an HDMI and use the xbox to stream.

  • Yep, cheap second hand, free off FB or even council clean up should be fine.

Otherwise just continue to watch on your phone/tablet/laptop/pub as I assume you've been doing these past 5 years…

  • This may suit if it is in your budget. 40" $299 delivered.

TV's are cheap commodity items, just buy one in the price range you like as you don't care about features. Just choose any one. Second hand, pick one up on the side of the road, ask friends if they have a old one lying around, they'll probably be pleased to get rid of it. Go to tip shops, recycling places. I don't know if you have a car, your biggest issue might be transporting it from wherever it is back to your place as they get quite big.

Old TV's are getting a bit like second hand fitness equipment I reckon, you have to give it away to get rid of it.

    • Yep, I'm yet to by a new TV personally, have received 3 (or 4?) 2nd hand from family or friends over the years👍

If only it was the same with cars and houses 😂

Yeah after looking at Facebook Marketplace for a while looks like I can get a very decent TV for even $100 - although if I'm lucky I'll see one on the side of the road …
