Sony to Buy Destiny Developer Bungie for $3.6bn

Is this going to be a battle of 2 companies owning games and not sharing them across platforms? I cant see gamers being the winners in anyway with any of this.. subscriptions only coming your way ??? :(

Sony has responded to Microsoft’s record-shattering deal to buy Activision Blizzard with acquisition news of its own, announcing today it plans to buy Destiny 2-maker Bungie for $US3.6 (A$5.9) billion.
Bungie will reportedly remain an “an independent subsidiary” of Sony Interactive Entertainment after the deal closes, leaving it free “to self-publish and reach players” however it chooses, according to Sony. That’s in contrast to past acquisitions by both Sony and Microsoft which have seen previously multiplatform studios like Bethesda go exclusive.

    • Like your post, they can edit all of their Q and A's too :)

I'll believe it when I see it.. as I see it if the motherships console is blocked from games controlled by MS, then Sony will put their foot down.

      We shall see i guess

Acquisitions and consolidations in the gaming industry has been going on for a while now.

Sony didnt spend a lot of cash on this deal. Probably might see another 1 or 2 further acquisitions in the near future. Take Two or Square Enix perhaps.

Ultimately if it becomes exclusives, gamers are the losers.

    • ^^ This 100%

    • Sony already confirmed there's more acquisitions coming this year. Rumour mill is adamant it's Capcom… We'll see.

  • Don’t tell Sony, but they can get Destiny on steam for free!

    • Ah, yes, but they cant get back all those sweet sweet PS only exclusive items they lost out on not long ago.

Funny thing is that a lot of people were saying that if Sony was to get a studio, they would only put their games on sony consoles and PC and how good of a guy is MS.

Now, with the acquisition of Bungie, they confirmed they will remain multiplatform and independent.

Totally different from MS and the likes of Zenimax, Activision/Blizzard.

    How things change…

  • doesn't matter to me since i still can't get a ps5 :(

  • Is this like MS bought Lego and Sony bought Duplo ?

  • Maybe Sony wants the TV and film rights to Destiny.

I have always been a Sony Fan boy until now

Microsoft buy - Minecraft, Activision Blizzard and Bethesda - Titles that they will have exclusivity too - WOW, Minecraft, Elder Scrolls franchise, Diablo, COD, Heathstone, Starcraft etc

Meanwhile Sony by a studio that 1 hit wondered decades ago which is also now owned by Microsoft - yes im aware they own Destiny but imho that is average af

Sony need to buy Square Enix, Konami and other big game producing companies or even better 'merge' with Nintendo

tbh the only way i can see Sony making up the ground on microsoft is if they purchased Rockstar games!! and took control of GTA

They also need to get there ps5 supply issues fixed - in addition need to change the design of the ps5 it is too darn big!

add to it the last of us two was a SJW suck fest really all Sony have is spiderman and Final Fantasy which as been rubbish since FFX for a while BAR the 7 remake which was amazing but it is recycling a legend of a game, i did like Uncharted but that looks like it is over as a franchise after thieves end

    • Sony still doing good it just MS got lots of $$$ all of a sudden thanks to covid / WFH.

      • All of a sudden? Think they had far more $$$ then Sony even before covid.

        • Just go check the Sony vs MS shares then you see the difference.
