Any Difference between Amazon US and AU Account?

Hi All,

Long story short, I had an Amazon.com from back in the day when it was only in the US. When they set up the warehouse in AU and had the .com.au domain, I kept my account US based.

Now, I'm thinking of subscribing to Amazon Prime. Can I continue to use my Amazon US account to subscribe to Prime? Or do I have to create a new .com.au account to subscribe to aussie amazon prime?

I think I remember reading from somewhere that I can use the same login, but then my account will be migrated over to the aussie domain. Is that accurate? Are there any advantages to doing so? I think the aussie version of Amazon does not have an android app store, and that I cannot purchase music. (I know that Prime includes music streaming, but I like to own the music and use my own music player instead of having to install another app).

Looking forward to your suggestions / thoughts. Cheers.

There are service differences between US and AU. I would just make a new account for Australia.

    • Thanks for that suggesting. I'm leaning towards creating separate accounts, just because I like to keep things segregated. Don't think it'll make any difference anyway. LOL

You cannot use Amazon.com Prime on Amazon.com.au orders.

You will need an Amazon.com.au account and Prime subscription.

I have .com, .co.uk and .com.au Prime subs at the same time and you have to purchase in each region although login account is the same on each site.

You can use the same account across Amazon AU, UK/EU and US stores, there's no impact on Prime membership, but you will need to subscribe to Prime membership for the region you want to take advantage of Prime benefits from.

Where your account is impacted is for digital goods and media as your account can only be tied to one region for the ebook, music, etc stores and possibly for Prime Video. Signing up for Prime on the AU store will not migrate your digital goods region to AU, you will have to do that yourself if you wanted to.

I've been using my account that was created on the US site for orders in the US and UK/EU before they opened the AU store. Now I have AU Prime as I primarily shop from the AU store but my ebook store is still set to US.

      • Thanks very much for the clarification, this is the answer I was looking for.

Makes sense that the prime membership is dependent on the country site that I'm logged into when subscribing, since the price and benefits differ quite a bit. Just need to be sure which site I'm logging into before subscribing.

It's a bit weird. You can login to the AU site with your US account and password but your previous orders and wishlists are unavailable but address and payment methods are. At least that's how it worked for me. Similarly Prime only works for the site you signed up on. ie if you join Prime on the AU site you don't get free shipping and other benefits while shopping the US site.

The whole music and possibly other things just don't work if you have AU payment info and address on your account, even if they're not the default.

    • I might have to check it out a bit more. Ever since Google stopped music purchases, I haven't found anywhere else apart from Amazon US which sells digital music from well known artists. I found Bandcamp, but they seem to be more for independent artists.

  • US Prime is a lot more expensive than the AU one and I learnt that I can get free shipping anyway from non prime US account with minimum purchase $25. Delivery timing is also not much difference, thus why I am ending my subs this April.

Yep, up to US$139pa now apparently. I expect to see a price rise for AU shortly.

      • Have been thinking of subscribing to Prime towards the end of the year, after i cancel another subscription first, but the possibility of a price rise for AU prime might make me bite the bullet. Cheers.

Pure speculation on my behalf based upon the price disparity so may not happen. $59pa is pretty cheap IMO for what you get but if they brought it up to the same as the US it'd be approx $195pa and that'd be much harder to swallow so I'd have to think hard about renewing again.

          • @apsilon: Indeed. Everything is speculation until it happens, but I definitely agree that at $59pa, it's quite good value. I doubt it'll increase to be the same as the US as that'll be a very big jump and will make almost everyone think twice about continuing their subs.

  • US Prime is getting a price rise
