  • 1000 points is 5 bucks?

    • 5 bucks at Woolies so more like Two Fiddy is real value

  • Is there a source for the offer?

    • The fine print on page 35 of the Woolworths catalogue in NSW.

  • Can any of these be used at JB Hi Fi?

    • No… unless JB Hi-Fi is suddenly classified by their merchant bank (NAB, if I remember correctly) as a restaurant or a hotel or a private golf course or an amusement park or a discotheque, etc…

If Indue (the gift card issuer) has set up these gift cards correctly and you attempt to use any of them at JB Hi-Fi, Indue should reject the transaction, as JB Hi-Fi’s merchant category code is not an eligible merchant category code for these gift cards.

  • Is there a list of places where this card is accepted? Because having 5812 eateries and restaurants is all well and good but is useless when only 5 of them are from WA, for example.

    • +2

5812 is the merchant code not the number of places that accept it

    • The gift cards in this deal are what I would call MCC-restricted Visa gift cards.

If you are not aware, MCCs (or merchant category codes) are four digit numbers assigned to a merchant that identifies the primary business undertaken by that merchant. It is outlined in ISO 18245, so these four digit numbers should be adopted by financial institutions around the world as a quick way to identify merchants.

In regards to your question of is there a list of places where this card is accepted, the short answer is no.

      • This information is set by financial institutions managing EFTPOS payments on behalf of the merchant, so you’d struggle to find an organisation that compiles all the businesses with a specific MCC in one place.

      • Merchants would likely not know the MCC assigned to them, as this is usually done behind the scenes for them by their financial institution managing EFTPOS payments.
