Oris Divers Sixty-Five 40mm $1,699 (RRP$3,000) Delivered @StarBuy

250

This has been on my watch-list (pun intended) for a while. It's a great looking vintage-inspired divers watch, and unlike a certain unnamed luxury Swiss brand which rhymes with Schmloex, you don't have to be on a 5-10 year waitlist to get one.

Now I'm off to tell myself I don't need another watch.

Edit There's also this great super-compressor style divers' watch from Alpina on sale: https://starbuy.com.au/seastrong-diver-heritage-300m-al-525s… and a 43.5mm Aquis in green: https://starbuy.com.au/oris-aquis-date-01-733-7730-4157-07-5…

  • why are Oris watches so expensive? I'm damn sure you wouldn't wear a 3000$ watch to take a dive as deep as 300m

    • +1

      You bet.

    • +4

3k isn't expensive in watch standarded.

    • my omega seamaster was on many 30m dives before i became worried about loosing it, now i take 2 watches on holidays the seamaster and the beater diver …. i wok, don’t dive with $7000 watch again but $1600 watch if i only had one on a holiday i would t have an issue with.
unlike james bond i have to pay for my watches that i take into the ocean.

  • +1

Divers watch that only goes to 100m? What?!

    • +1

      Bath tub diving…

Wonder how many dives the leather strap will last.

    • +2

And with a leather strap 🙄

    • +1

water rating for watches are funny things , the water resistance of a watch is also based on physical movement ….. people don’t swim to 100m but 100m watches are for swimming, snorkeling, wr200 are for diving e.g 30m and have screw down crowns …. 300m you are on mixed gas and diving bell for work so might have helium release valve ……. differences between desk diver, recreational diver, professional diver watches …..

      • oh helium release valve …. not really needed you can unscrew the date/time crown to release helium ….this is for people who professionally saturation dive , not for recreational divers …. so helium release valves i think are more marketing than really needed.

  • -2

Yeah I wonder why no 5 years waiting list

    • -1

waiting list seems to be hype to the tyre kickers to talk up a products in Australia and make it seem exclusive where we don’t have many schmolex shops ….. singapore has lots of schmolex shops ….. when i was deciding between omega or schmolex 4 years ago in australia , both shops had stock once they knew i was buying not just looking, went omega ,should have gone schmolex as better resale …..

      • +1

        I had a 116613ln diamond dial.
It's only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
Took me a while to sell it and I didn't get what I wanted for it.

  • Any brass models for sale?

    • no brass but gold looks like brass ….. was it a question for price or aesthetics?

      • +1

They have a lovely brass model, brass fades and gets a lovely patina over time.

Carl Basheer version I think it is?

  • 26 jewels

    We talking emerald, ruby, topaz?

    • +1

      Ruby or sapphire :)
They are used as bearings in watches, so more jewels can mean a more complicated watch.

      • +1

        Synthetic.

      • ruby is red sapphire….yes synthetic which is actually better then natural in this application.

  • +1 for being so cryptic with Schmolex 😏

      A good value workhorse https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-sumo-prospex-spb103j/

      Arguably a better watch too.

      • Hey this is nice, and not a fortnight of salary

      • My seiko sumo keeps better time than my oris. So in my opinion it'd a better watch too

        • I don’t think the Oris is adjusted, but mine is running COSC. Some of my Seikos are close too. Luck of the draw.

          • @ilikeit: same, have an invicta n35a that is running to COSC spec, but my orient that should be better is 25 secs per day …. another invicta with n35a that is also 25 sec …. yes really is luck of the draw unless you pay for the certification.

it’s why i really like quartz or eco drive ……

      • You are comparing apples and onions. They are not remotely the same. No one’s cross shopping those two. The Sumo is damn good watch though. Feels feels solid.

        • Seiko's 6r35 has 75hr power reserve with +/-25 seconds tolerance (reality is upto +/- 10 seconds a day)…

The Sumo with 200m is more appropriate as a divers watch. :) definitely a much better watch than the Oris posted by op.

          • @[Deactivated]: They are fairly different, can't just say one is better. Totally different looks and finishes. Both would be good in their own rights, depends if you're going to go diving with it.
One is more elegant/classic the other a good work horse.

Agree it's luck of the drawer to some amount how well your actual example keeps time, but most should come in within spec. Not that big a deal if not wearing every day or if you rotate a few watches - pretty quick to set and adjust anyway. Most autos actually run better the more you wear them.

      • ahhh some people own a work horse and a stallion ….. especially if you have a stable of horses … in this case draw full of watches ….

        • But… With an Oris?

  • +1

Personal choice but i find this option from bulova much better .. obviously brand value matters so excuse me being a cheap lizard here

    https://www.shiels.com.au/bulova-96b322-oceanographer-automa…

    • +2

But that looks ugly compared to this one..

      • +1

Each to their own taste mate 🥸

That was my personal opinion as I found over the years..that watches look good or bad only on wrist.

Pls try it before you buy otherwise it is all hypothesis.

  • Good price for brand new watch.

  • If this one was about $1200 I'd be tempted
    https://starbuy.com.au/oris-divers-sixty-five-01-733-7707-43…
It's in that awkward price range where it's not in AP/Rolex league so you aren't really buying it as an investment but it's also a decent enough chunk of change that you wanna look after it lol
Would be a nice watch to use everyday though and hopefully it'll develop a nice patina overtime but given so many of the teenage gangsters out there are becoming Swiss watch experts you'd probably still likely get robbed it you wore it on the train lol
Idk I like the idea of having a nice Swiss watch but in reality I think I'm happy using my phone to tell time and rocking my Casio when need be.

    • Good piece, you also consider a Tag. It's mid-range luxury with quite sporty designs.

There's the black bay from Tudor but it's again more pricey and can't imagine it bringing more than that piece.

    • which casio ….the WR200 with the marlin for under $100 ?

      • Yes exactly the Pepsi style one I got it for about $65 at the start of the covid drama and was seriously thinking about buying a black bay or speedy but have since decided as much as I like them I don't want to be a walking target. I actually tried calling a couple of Rolex dealers at the time not realising how difficult that process is at the time lol

  • Mate you don't need another watch. It's a great piece no doubt. You should also look at the Rado Captain Cook if you like this model.

  • This is one of favourite watches. I have it with the black dial on the rivet bracelet. It’s obviously not as tough and rugged as modern divers with its vintage aesthetic, but is extremely comfortable and looks sensational. The bubble crystal is amazing and puts most of my other sapphires to shame. It’s up there with a warm acrylic crystal. I recommend the bracelet and tropic strap.

  • man such a nice deal. great watch!

  • if people are after beater DIVE watches ….simply scuba 500m start at $150 ….. apeks 500m who make dive computers are $280 same internals as the simply scuba….. you can get 1000m dive watches for under $300 with helium release valves …. there is one you tube a person who found an old beater dive watch in the ocean and restored it, no leaks just exterior need clean up…… so buy the stylish dive watch because you like the look, if you are worried about damage or loss get a dive watch from dive shop …designed for diving and getting mistreated , and priced that if lost not an issue …..and the logos are cool …..usually has a diver or dive mask ….. quartz are good as always ready to go…. auto are usually n35a and on a dive trip you don’t care about +- 10 seconds per day …..modern manufacturing makes cases cheap …..we are lucky in that we live in a time where we can buy a watch for $300 where the same quality 30 years ago would have cost $3000 dollars …enjoy your watches as either a workhorse or a fashion accessory or both ….

  • +1

$1700 is too much coin for something with a cheap Sellita SW200 movement.

The Oris watches with their 80 hour in house Calibre 400 are a lot more interesting but priced way too high https://starbuy.com.au/watch-brands/oris/calibre-400/?page=1…

  • Pretty good price, vintage done right!

I'd prefer a bracelet version, but the 40mm wears very nicely. Simple, super legible, lovely balanced face and hands.

Green with a bronze bezel would look pretty cracking for that extra patina look (or even the black face).

Agree the lume could be a bit better, but probably in line with vintage watches. I wouldn't wear a leather strap in the pool let alone diving, most people wouldn't have taken divers to depth anyway, so 100m is fine for the vast majority of people. Anyone wanting more water resistance and lume should look at the Aquis (300m). 100m is fine for the pool/beach.

It's true the price of oris has crept up over the years but what hasn't.. they represent excellent quality for what you pay, and the history and heritage. Some brands like Tag you are paying more for the advertising and aren't any cheaper. The Tudor blackbay is a decent step up in price ($5k aren't they).

    Add "wristwatch" to title please.

  • this is really nice, will have to go on my list for groomsmen purposes, might be a bit pricy

  • Guessing to buy the bracelet separately isn't that economical, guessing retailer's may try and charge $500? Usually better to get the stainless then buy a rubber strap for example, but they still wan $3k doe the bracelet version.

    Ps seems OOS now
