Even with the discount I think Singapore Airlines comes in cheaper and quicker.

A350s is better than 787s as well. Wider cabin with the same 3-3-3 layout, and you can really tell the difference if you get a window seat. The curvature is so severe on the 787 that you will hit the wall with just a slight tilt of the head vs the 350.

      • +2

Agree. 787 is garbage for economy, A350 is far more comfortable.

    • 20 Mins difference between Sydney and London between Singapore and Qantas via the current Darwin route. this will change if it reverts to Perth :(

I was wondering if there was a new line of London GPUs for a hot second

  • Does the discount work the other way? Return flight originating from London to Aus?

What about code share flights with Emirates?

    • +1

Seems like it may not work with EK flight with QF code.

Qatar is cheaper, better product both in coach and J.

    • Except you transit in Doha, wouldn’t go if you’re female

      • horrible situation and should never have happened, the people responsible are being held accountable. from the publicity of this you can be sure they wont let it happen again.

        • You hope so, but I haven’t been able to see any confirmation of that news. It’s the main reason I wouldn’t be comfortable travelling through Doha with my wife at present.

If you can find and share the news about change in laws or holding the people responsible, please share for the rest of us too.

Just be careful with Qantas. I flew with them over xmas and got COVID so couldn't get my flight home. Their website said to call them if you did, but after waiting on hold for 5 hours twice and being hung up on, I couldn't get through. I managed to change my flight online and the fare difference I had to pay from I think a sale to normal economy seat was $1200 - i.e. the ticket doubled. This was despite having 'no change fee' and unlimited changes available for all fares booked when I booked. I then looked to try to change the seat again as I was worried I may test positive again… and their change function on the my booking was down. I tried for 5 days and never got through. Luckily my test came back neg in time, but if it hadn't i would have lost the entire ticket and have to buy a new one. Of which there were no seats available for at least 2 weeks and would have had to pay $2500 a week later to fly on Emirates.
I sent a complaint on their website and got a generic response 4 weeks later telling me about fare change fees (which didn't apply) and that they endeavor to answer calls as quick as they can (even though i said they never answered)

Sorry long post, but the point is they have no customer service so if something goes wrong you're (profanity).

I saw many others wiht similar issues and friends that have had terrible experiences with qantas.

On the flipside, my actual flight was with Emirates and I could get through to them in under an hour and they were very helpful with my COVID related questions even though I had booked through qantas.

I dont think Ill ever fly qantas again

    • Well it does say a difference in fare is possible and they are right saying no 'change' fee. 5hrs is rubbish though.

      • Yes I know. But for the fare difference to be $1200 (from 1200 to 2400) both for economy seems a bit rich. I.e. they are somewhat misleading. And their customer service response spoke to a fare change fee which didnt'apply.
The point was I never got through to them and the website change fare function was down so if I needed to change again I would have been screwed
And the fact they say call us if you get covid implies there may be different treatment such as waiving that or why would they ask you to call?
When you get covid you don't know when you will test negative again so it's hard to know when to change the flight to, so you need some flexibility (i.e. a working change function on web and / or customer service to answer the phone!!)

What Qantas doesn't tell you is that you can only change to the same or higher fare class. The fare class is secret which is not visible to the customer. This means that almost everybody always has to pay more to make changes as they cannot access fares in the cheaper fare classes.

It is highly deceptive conduct from Qantas.

agreed. and i swear that difference when i first booked was maybe $500 max, and then they increased that fare so much as it got closer to the date. they can effectively increase the fare for the higher class as much as they want i guess??

        • Umm no, it's standard airline practice.

If you or they make any changes to the flights, be prepared to spend days on hold over the phone only to be hung up on by clueless phone agents.

and never get through, as was my experience. also costly, even dialing on skype cost me close to $100 on hold with no result

  • When I was booking London flights the other week ANA had the best deal in business, $5096 for the dates I wanted from the Gold Coast via Sydney, there were some days just below $5k too. There were agents selling the ticket cheaper still but went direct as its just easier in the current climate.

Longer flight but just gives more time to drink the sake :) The Tokyo to London part is with their new The Room seat. Qantas, Singapore, Emirates etc. were all much more expensive.

I went to London at Christmas with Singapore Airlines and had to change my return flight whilst I was there and it cost $70 in fare difference, 30 minute phone call. My original ticket was under $1800 return so probably one of the cheapest fare classes. Also I booked our tickets in Feb 2021 for Dec 2021 travel, Singapore Airlines was still flying to Brisbane however qantas wasnt. So got to think about that to if you're not in sydney

TLDR: Singapore Airlines are excellent if you need to change anything. Highly recommended over qantas (based on the experience posted on here).

Not worth it for $100 in case Qantas make a change and you have to deal with their call centre. They changed one of my flights to cause a 20 hour layover on Tuesday. Then yesterday they inadvertently changed my booking from first to economy and hung-up on me when I noticed the change. Now their call centres insist I was always in economy even though I have the booking confirmation, tickets, seats and screen shots for first. "Sorry you can't send emails to us, try calling back between 7am and 7pm to speak to the Australian call centre". I have been trying that now for three days.

It seems the same with most "premium" Aussie providers - the highest prices and the worst support.
Telstra comes to mind as one of the "old guard" along with Qantas that just rob people and provide p***poor service

Also note that with Qantas at least until 1st April if you aren't willing or able to provide proof of vaccination you cannot board their aircraft, even if the destination country does not require it.
Doesn't apply to most but it's a pretty important thing to know

How much are the non-LHR flights? Wanting to mine on the side.
