Australia’s 15,076 public payphones will be free to use. Both local and national phone calls with be fee-free as part of the Telstra's payphone overhaul, as well as calls to Australian mobile phone numbers, with no restrictions other than a six-hour limit on phone calls.
Consumers will still have to pay to call overseas, however.

I'm not sure if 6 hours will be enough time to call Centrelink and be on hold for hours.
Years ago I tested the theory that it was faster to just go in. I called them, and while on hold, went to the local centrelink office, still waited for an hour or so to be seen, sorted it all out, and was still on hold when I left.

If you REALLY REALLY have to call centrelink, I find the best way is to lodge a complaint on their website and wait for the call back. The best thing is that the people who handle complaints ACTUALLY know what they are doing, unlike those random, clueless ones you might get when calling in.
haha yeah i tried this, took them a week or two for them to call back so, shouldnt be urgent
At least they picked up for you. I have a log on my mobile: I rang them 36 times one day and it was busy every time. I gave up and went in person. 🙄
can you send sms? I left a job and the boss owes me 5 hours pay. I left a message but no joy. I know he is busy so a sms is the next step.

I’ve seen queues of people waiting in line, coins at the ready, to use a payphone to call home and tell their family and friends they’re safe after a bushfire, a cyclone or some other natural disaster has taken the mobile network down.
Making them free for up to 6 hour calls may not help these people as much as he thinks. I wonder if they could limit calls to 3mins or something (with a warning when picking up the handset and when the time is nearly up) in these situations.

It costs more to collect the money, then they collect.
They need to provide public phones as part of the Telecommunication licence so they can't get out of it, so what do you do? Provide them for free.
Perhaps they should just accept paypass?

These new payphone contraptions are clearly a security risk in the making! We should enact legislation to ban anonymous payphones - you know the ones you can use anonymously by placing untraceable currency into and making a call and putting on a fake accent! Such a serious concern, unsure how they've survived so many decades out there!
