    Thanks for sharing OP.

  • I wonder how much of a ding these put in fuel economy

    • +53

Depends if you have it extended or not

      • +4

        touché

      • +8

Perhaps matey, it could reduce ye fuel economy depending on the wind speed and wind direction if hoisted high enough arrrr.

        • +3

or it could increase your economy, if the wind was blowing the right way

          • +3

@Jackson: Get two and glide your way to work

    • +6

Not sure about fuel economy, but they sure as hell "ding" when the poles rip out due to wind and wrap around your car.

      • Good point, didn't think of that (unacceptable) risk

      • I have a kings one which looks very similar quality to this and yeah it's ok when there is no wind but with any slight wind the guy ropes don't hold shit and the thing flips on itself. Doesn't help that it's 2m wide but 3m long when it should be the other way round. Currently trying to decide which 270 awning to replace it with but they are all so expensive, ($2k vs $500 for a kings 270) devo when I missed a 2nd hand darche for $800

        • +5

I've had the 2.5m Kings awning on my car for 4 years. Camped in all kids of weather, have the 3m extension straight out/off to the side/down on an angle depending on location, hang washing off it, wet towels and wetsuits for a family of 4. Never had an issue with it.

Throw out the ropes that come with it when you get it and replace with any decent ones with good tensioners and pegs (correct pegs for ground condition ie dirt, rock, sand), 2 ropes each corner at right angles, pitched correctly (for wind/rain) and you wont have an issue. If your guy ropes are letting go then you haven't anchored it correctly.

I also have carribeners attached to the ends of my guy ropes for quick and solid connect/disconnect at the awning end and utilise occy straps in high wind for some give.

Any $2k awning can get flipped over your car if not set up correctly. Get it right with a cheap awning first before spending on a high $$$ awning.

          • @Villainous: yeah the stock ropes disintegrated so we put some thick cord on it and got the sand screw types but only rope one per side. its far longer than it is wider as well which seems to be the issue. was on a beach (wallaroo north) where everyones bar the ratcheted ones flew off.

          • +1

@Villainous: Mate , you sound like you know what you're doing… No wonder it works for you, it's the rest of us noobs that'll struggle

        • +1

          I upgraded to a motop 270

    • Mine hasn't really, my kids pram feels like it weighs about the same.

      • Doesn't it mess with the aerodynamics?

        • +2

i think because it goes along the car it would be minimal, but defs some. Most people who have these have probs already got other things like bull bars, roof racks etc that would have bigger effects

        • +9

Roof rack expected to add more drag than this awning. Nonetheless it does add small amount of drag area and some increase in coefficient of friction.

Speed is actually a bigger factor in drag (F = Cd.(ρ.V^2)/2.A). Hate to say this but slowing down does reduce drag and improve fuel economy if you can't do anything about CoF and/or reference area (don't throw stones at me, physics can't lie…). But, slowing too much will make engine very inefficient, every car has a sweet spot, my compact sedan happens to be around 90-100km/h.

I have one each side extended, Fuel on take off is a bitch, once airboune it not too bad

      • Put in neutral then roll off cliff…

    • Negligible on a diesel vehicle

    • +1

Anecdotally, I have an XTM awning and it's probably about 5% less fuel economy. I've got mine on some easy off brackets, so it doesn't live full time on the car, but they cost $80ish to get.

  • Got one. Thanks.

  • +3

Got this 18 months ago. Sturdy little thing but it is quite small for anything other than sitting under or maybe to set your swag under. Won't find many wall packs for it as most are for 2.5*2 awnings. Has stood up in 30knot gusts, just make sure guy ropes are used!

  • +3

I got this last October, honestly I would avoid this one not because of quality but I think 2x2m is too small for an awning. You get setup and then and as the sunlights getting closer, you're moving closer and closer to the car, if its raining you're still a fair distance in because the rain splashing legs once it hits ground.

If I had my time again I wouldn't get this one, I would get something bigger, or invest in one that wraps around the back as well.

    • +1

Sounds like you need a 270° awning and walls. This was never going to be a rain shelter, more a structure to hang lights/shade when angled the right way around. BCF/SCA's XTM awning and wall pack is pretty solid. I run it on the other side of the car and has kept us dry on some pretty wet weekends.

    • +2

It depends on how many people are under the awning. I have one 2m x 2m Kings awning, when I am by myself, it is plenty of room. If you are planning to shade a whole family of four or more, then this is too small.

    • +1 on the size, I had one of these on my van, bought the last time they were $60. It's a great buy for $60 bucks but you'll find a 2.5m x 2.5m to generally be a better solution.

Held up in rain and wind really well.

For $60 you can't really go past it if you're looking for a cheap option.

    • +1

you could also reposition your vehicle so it is on the sundown side.

Thanks OP, dont forget to use welcome10

I would get this one instead to be honest

    • +3

Isn’t that just the side wall?

      • Yep just the side wall haha

        • yep it is…. i just noticed…. :(

    • I think this only give you the side wall and not the whole thing?

      • yep.. :(

  • -4

That be a quality item for $50….

    • Its fine.

  • i was about to buy king on eBay, is this as good or better?

    • I have the Kings and I am guessing they are of similar quality, on the budget level.
Also have a larger Ridge Ryder Premium 2.5m x 2.5m awning, it is of better quality, more expensive of course.

  • +2

Like others have said, quality is good, better than kinds in my opinion. However 2x2 is small. Can't fit a 3 man under it, good for a couple chairs and a table though. Would go bigger if I was to buy another, but for $59 is still a good deal imo

  • Anyone having trouble with C&C? It's saying the item is in stock in stores, but no option to actually pick the store…

    • No issue. Just bought C&c

  • Additional fittings required to fit awning to roof racks…

    Cost?

    • Depends on your setup. If you have a T channel on your racks, you can get a couple bolts for $20 from SCA or probably cheaper on AliExpress.

      • A normal dome head bolt can be filed to act as a channel bolt.

File the head down on each side to lock in to the slot and then a bit off the top so it fits in the channel.

I had to make 120 of them a couple of weeks back for a job we had and couldn't get them from China in time.

  • anyone know of this will fit onto the Subaru built in roof racks?

    • it's 2m mate, time to get out the tape measure

      • brackets on the side of it, as they're built into the car. Not the length.

        • +1

do you have the roof racks on the roof rails? You'll need them I reckon. Those rails aren't meant to hold anythign on their own are they?

    • Can confirm 2m roof box fits my Forester well, but I think you'll definitely need roof racks rather than just side rails that racks would mount onto.

The awning mounts I've looked at slot into a channel in the roof racks.

    Thanks op

Arent these called (profanity) awnings? drive around 11 months of the year with it attached to your car.

    • I mean how else do you do it? The beauty of it is my camper is ready to go at all times and in the 6 months I've had it has seen about a fortnight of continual use across half a dozen weekends. Why would anyone remove the awning, recovery tracks, shovel etc in between trips.

    • you can get single bolt quick release brackets for them

  • We have a roof top tent that is canvas / poly mix (the same as this awning?). Ours is 300gsm and seems fairly light - this awning is only 200gsm. It seems to be a budget build but reflects the price. Just consider, it will cost much more to replace that canvas than what the awning cost.

  • I have a rhino roof rack so need the additional fittings if I was to buy this. Does anyone know how much that would cost?

    • +2

$15-$20 bucks and you may need to drill into the roof racks. That's why I'm using Yakima quick release clamps.

      • Hi there
What type of racks do you have? Are the Yakima quick release clamps worth the extra money?

        • They should fit all roof racks. Yeah I reckon they're worth it since I can swap it over to our other car in a few minutes.

    • +1

Have a look on ebay - I went with the Yakima awning brackets because you can mount the awning above the level of the roof rack or below it.

      Rhino-Rack bracket

  • If not available in store you're up for delivery charges - "big and bulky items" aren't covered in free delivery.

  • 2x2 is just too small, at least the Kings ones come in different sizes. Might be ok for the back of your 4x4

    • A 2m awning on the back of your 4x4?

      Good luck with that.

      • He is driving a Unimog…

  • +1

    Got one, thanks OP!

  • I have a long one (2.6m) on the side of my 4x4, but I always felt a smaller one at the back where my drawers, fridge and gear is housed would be more handy. Would need to be about 1.3m wide.

    • +1

The ARB one I had was perfect for the back, but got irritated setting up 2 awnings… dished out for Foxwing and never looked back.

  • +1
  • Foxwing FTW….

    • Nah, they're still poorly made with cheap materials. SupaRV (SupaPeg) are made in Oz, with Australian made canvas/components and are the best quality awnings that I've seen. The twist lock poles are silky smooth to operate, and never slip. The 2.5x2.5m Easy ERV awning with 2 x walls for $569 was a bargain a few months ago. Much more usable space than the 270 awnings and so easy to erect. Also included a center spreader bar that is curved and pops the middle of the canvas up, so you can maintain head height with a near level fly, and never have water pooling on top.

Nah, they're still poorly made with cheap materials.

LOL! its 6yrs old and still works like day 1. If thats cheap I'll go cheap anyday.

      • $580 just for the awning now :(

      • I think you just made this deal look even better…

  • +1

    The spice must flow

  • 2.5m also on sale for $109.

  • Got one. Of course, I haven't got roof racks, so then started looking for them. Got a 2nd hand Mitsubishi set with a mesh tray for $250.

  • Finally picked mine up. FYI Anaconda holds click and collects for a week
