  • Do you specifically want that form factor or are you just looking at that because it was recommended / the only thing you're allowed to purchase?

Dell Inspirons are home use / mainstream product lines, for reliability I'd recommend looking at the Dell Latitude series instead. or XPS.

  • Just looking for a light laptop for personal home use and learning cloud computing. Looking to keep it under $1500.

  • that's pretty solid, would be perfect for my girlfriend. Do you know which companies do Dell EPP?

I've got the XPS version with identical specs but a much nicer screen and build quality. Paid $2000 for it about 12 months ago, on sale from $3,700.

I love it, so much that the other half also has the same laptop.

If you don't care about the 2 in 1 form factor - it is nice, but personally I hardly use it, I'd look at the XPS here. It has near identical specs but with a 500 nit screen vs only 300 on the Inspiron plus the build quality.

Don't stress on the i7 vs i5 thing. They are both very good chips in the ultralight category and due to the cooling on the inspiron (and even the XPS for that matter) the i7 will very quickly throttle to i5 speeds anyways. UserBenchmark reports barely a 2% gain in real world noticeable performance - see here. For your use, you won't need i7, so the premium build quality and nicer screen is a smart move IMO.

A little bit higher priced, but don't forget Cashrewards has 10% cashback that will save you another $150 or so off the price, and 5% back in Dell dollars to buy a bag or case etc. If you don't have cashrewards, jump on it as there is a $25 refer a friend bonus so find a link in your profile for a random referral. Should be close to $1,400 after the cashrewards, and Dell voucher.

Thanks for taking time and your feedback. Pulled the trigger on Inspiron as I got additional 7% off and the final price was $1263, Cashrewards l tracked $80 as Cashback and will hopefully claim GST refund if my planned overseas trip goes ahead in April.
I am going to keep looking for deal on XPS and pass the Inspiron to my son when I buy XPS.

Nice! Enjoy. Usually around March-April Dell gets exciting with their deals when they clear out for new arrivals.
