  • Any idea when these supply shortages will end, OP? (might not be an easy one to answer, I know)

It's really hard to tell. The current supply indicates at least another two years.

It's possible that demand will drop and orders will be cancelled reducing that to a year or so, but items like disc brake pads are needing to be backordered 6+ months in advance often times.

Most stock coming through was backorders many months ago, some even close to two years ago.

Suppliers are having to order 2025 bikes already, previously many would've only had orders for 2022 at this point.

      • All good thanks for the reply. Weirdly I called around and finally got a Rockhopper Elite 29 :) been waiting for a year!

This is really a sad state of affairs.

You used to be able to walk into any Bike Store in Perth and get 15% of RRP with barely any haggling.

Over Christmas they refused to talk price and now 10% is actually a deal.

    • Do keep in mind that this is off the advertised price. Many prices have already been marked down. Whatever price is advertised, 10% off that. Many models are ~15% off RRP due to this.

If it's not a clearance/sale price but our usual markdown, it won't be labelled as a sale price, but may be lower than RRP.

Unfortunately a lot of models are irreplaceable forcing shops to avoid discounts.

Also due to online becoming a dominant market, rather than big sales, our normal advertised prices have had to shrink. Rather than giving a discount when asked, the pre-set price is already marked down.

    • Went back to working in a bikeshop over the covid period (essential services thank god) and the bikes were literally selling themselves with zero effort. In my 7 years in the industry i had never put in so little effort in trying to sell them.

Usually we'd sweeten it with a free helmet or 20% off accessories, but in this case people were literally fighting over the last bikes on the floor and paying full retail. But then again thats constrained supply chains for you, similar sort of state to car dealerships.

Was good for the local bike store who had been getting shafted from online sales for so long.

      • Thats basically what we saw at Giant Osborne Park.

They would build a bike (sometimes they were sold before it came out of the box) and the sold tag would be on the bike.

The only ones always available were the odd shaped commuter ones, not the Cross City series.

        • The one that i was at are still like that, the store stock is largely already pre-sold and order lists are out to August.

Bikes come in and go out within 2 days, i heard of bike shops paying bonuses on top of your hourly wage per bike build. The floor was empty for much of last year due to forward orders already being spoken for.
I think they're currently into the 2022/2023 order sheet (sept 2022 onwards) with all of 2021/2022 sold out.

          • @Drakesy: Sweet lord, good to know.

I was looking for a flat bar with in hub hears, belt driven, your assessment and my internet searches confirm I can forget about it until probably 2024.

        • Just bought a bike still in a box…. Theyre assembling next week for me
