Is ALDI Introducing a Loyalty Program?

A new scanner has been added to the EFTPOS machines at my local ALDI.

Exhibit A
Sorry for the blurry photo but I was trying to be discrete.

The checkout dude didn't know what they were for.

I'm guessing a loyalty program is incoming. I hope not.

Handbaskets are about to be introduced so there are changes coming to ALDI.

    Exhibit A(files.ozbargain.com.au)

That's the new tool they're experimenting with to beam advertisements directly into your brain as you enter your PIN.

      That makes sense. Cheers.

What happens if you enter the wrong PIN?

      • +5

        They increase the voltage!

      • charge you credit card fee each time you enter the wrong pin :)

This is to detect the chip you get with your vaccine. It verifies you're vaxxed, otherwise you're denied your purchases.

  • Handbaskets are about to be introduced

They've been available at a local Aldi for a couple of weeks. About time.

    • Not in mine yet but was told they are coming.

    • Seen the handbaskets at a few stores and they are getting rolled out to more stores.

The other one is Aldi is also rolling out self checkout registers.

I’m gonna shoot from the hip here, since it has been a while since I have walked into an ALDI…

It could also be that ALDI may soon be updating their physical gift cards so that they have barcodes on the back, or maybe they’ll be soon introducing eGift Cards? The industry trend is to move away from magstripes, as Mastercard has announced that they’ll start phasing out magstripes in 2024.

As a side note, Woolworths Group recently started selling QC gift cards in their stores, which are physical gift cards with barcodes printed on the back of the card and more information in the transaction history on where the gift card was spent (e.g. business name, store number and store name). Older Woolworths Group gift cards are WEX gift cards, which have no barcode printed on the back and the transaction history only tells you the store name; these are slowly being phased out from sale. I guess Woolworths is getting ahead of the curve and future-proofing their gift cards so you can still redeem the funds on a QC gift card one day when EFTPOS terminals no longer support magstripes, and maybe ALDI is going to be doing the same too?

Didn't think of that and it makes sense. Cheers.

  • Could it be related to EFTPOS's new QR payment platform? I know it's a QR code so it doesn't explain the wire. But still.

    • +2

I’m doubtful, because it seems like the customer scans a QR code provided by the business, rather than the business scans a QR code provided by the customer.

Aldi doesn't do rewards schemes as a principle of their business so doubt it. Definitely none in UK.

Closest I could find is this sanitation pad attachment: https://shop.sanitouch.com/products/quest-qt27-payment-termi…

Agree. ALDI marketing department makes a point of no loyalty scheme to keep the costs down. I for one hope they don't introduce one because it has to be paid for by someone (read customer)

There is a laser scanner underneath the black box. I took a peek but didn't get a photo.

  • What did they say when you asked them what that thing is?

I have no idea mate. That will be $184.52. Do you want the latest catalogue?

      • Spending $182.52 at ALDI? How??

Must be loading up on all the specials which you know you don't need lol

        • That's a cheap shop. Normally around the $250 mark. I do a fortnightly shop there and load up. No specials on this occasion.

  • I'm guessing it's attachment for finger sanitizer https://images.app.goo.gl/rKG5c4PmskQaUBix6

    I googled for Quest POS.

    • Hybroid mentioned that.

But there is definitely a laser scanner underneath the cover.

  • prolly so they can place more surcharge on credit card signs

  • Looks the same as flybuys scanner at coles.

  • Aldi confirmed to Yahoo News Australia that the new reader is a trial of technology designed to scan barcodes on digital gift cards.

    • Awesome. Thanks for the update.
