Noise cancelling earphones for Long Haul flight

Hello,

I'm making a long haul flight for the first time with 2 friends, to London.
I have found overnight flights of 8-9 hrs an absolute torture because I cannot sleep in the seated position, the noise of the aircraft is probably another factor. I swore I would never take an overnight flight again…but here I am…

In prep for my 15hr+ flight (in late Aug & of course its Economy class), what gadgets/items do you think I can get to make my trip a bit more comfortable?

I thought of noise cancelling headphones - can someone suggest a good deal for these?
(and any other suggestions of what to get?)

Thanks alot!

they are very comfortable (doesnt clamp your ears) as they are active noise cancelling =)

Recommend the Bose QC15. Purchase from Amazon and ship to Australia via a reshipper. I used MyUs and they arrived in just over a week.

    • hey jasonc74: thanks heaps for the tips! Greatly appreciated. I've got a MyUs account with my Amex card already set up, which is good too. :) :)

Another recommendation for the Bose QC15. Excellent.

    • Thanks plexor for posting & advising you also agree with the Bose QC15 :) :)

If QC15's are outside of your budget, try a pair of the Creative Aurvana X-Fi NC. $99 shipped http://au.store.creative.com/headphones-headsets/aurvana-x-f…

I've used these on 8+ hour flights many times and they've served me well. Just bring along a pair of earplugs for sleeping as these aren't very comfortable for that purpose

    • Thanks alot RandomNinja!! :)
Do you know where I can try these in store by any chance? (I'll have to do that with the Bose ones as well) to check they fit well?

Haha, for the price of those Bose QC15's you could upgrade to first class LOLOLOL.

    • what the? and you never decided to post this on ozbargain? having the ability to upgrade from economy to first class for roughly 300 dollars is a bargain i say.. please post up details =)
      thanks in advance

      • I meant from Sydney to Canberra. :D

I have the Aurvana X-Fi and Audio Technica ATH-ANC7b headphones. I quite like the sound on the Aurvana but the build quality isn't great. A piece has fallen off which seems to be a common complaint. They also chew through batteries fairly fast. Uses 2AAA (i think) and they last for maybe 10hrs.

I much prefer the ATH-ANC7b's. Got them for $US138 delivered from Amazon. Sound is fine, noise cancellation decent, comfortable for many hours wearing. Might be a little sound leakage at higher volume, but I don't like it too loud anyway. There's a fairly bright blue light on the side which perhaps might annoy fellow aeroplane passengers when the lights are off. But, ahem, that's not my problem. 1 AA battery lasts an awfully long time. I seem to recall reading 40hrs. Anyway, no issues to/from Europe.

I would expect the Bose ones to be better, but i couldn't justify more than twice the price to myself. I'm quite satisfied with the ANC7b's.

    • hey slowcoach, really really appreciate your detailed opinion/report, esp about battery life, build quality, sound quality set against price. Very very helpful. Thanks again! :)

I'm travelling with my 12yo to London in June … with Air China (might make your economy seem like business class)!

As well as noise cancelling earphones (QC15 highly recommended + a Sony pair) we are taking:
iPads & iPhones loaded with fresh movies, music and great radio shows
    + eyemasks http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63632
    +earplugs
    and my mother-in-law suggested I wear a nappy http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67674

    !!!

    • hi mxyzptik, thanks heaps for sharing what you're bringing on board (complete with ozbargain deals!!!)
      LOL re: nappy :D

Hope you all have a great time in London & the flight goes well :)
